Das war in Kiel für eine kommunale Wahl in einer Großstadt sogar eine vergleichsweise große Wahlbeteiligung 🫤 ist echt traurig
December 9, 2025 at 11:18 AM
Trotzdem doof

I think the IC/ICE stopping in Ringsted and Nykøbing would be far more useful for most Danish passengers going all the way to Hamburg because they'd profit from higher speed and comfort. The regional trains will have a very commuter focused design, why stay on that for 3-4 hours?
November 22, 2025 at 4:59 PM
The thing is that the Hamburg trains will already be extended somewhere else as they run to Neustadt and Travemünde. A third northern destination doesn't bring much benefit and is no capacity for it. Kiel trains run through to Lüneburg. This node is already established
November 22, 2025 at 11:31 AM
Lübeck will have regional service to Kiel, Hamburg, Neustadt, Travemünde, Lüneburg, Schwerin and Rostock and ICE services to Berlin and Southern Germany. It is a real hub. There are timed transfers between all trains like in Switzerland. Interchanging there really isn't a big problem
November 22, 2025 at 11:28 AM
The trains on the Hamburg-Lübeck line are really new, it would be a waste to buy new trains for that line just because a timed transfer is apparently not convenient enough. You know what a timed transfer is? It's super easy. You can't have direct trains everywhere, it doesn't work
November 22, 2025 at 12:43 AM
Again, it doesn't really make sense to run 4 hour long regional trains when there are fast long distance services already, most people would take a faster train. And, again, the Denmark-compatible trains don't have enough capacity for Hamburg-Lübeck
November 22, 2025 at 12:15 AM
You can't just extend a German train to Denmark because Denmark has a different electrification system. And the trains from Hamburg already travel beyond Lübeck to Travemünde and Neustadt, the latter actually stopping on some of the same stops as Fehmarn trains.
November 22, 2025 at 12:13 AM
But why, and on what tracks? In a world with timed transfers this is not necessary. It would mean that there'd be two trains from Lübeck to Hamburg in just a couple of minutes, just because transferring in Lübeck is so difficult? It's a huge waste of money and track capacity
November 21, 2025 at 10:50 PM
And ICs are per definition not regional in Germany, so no matter how fast, it'll be an RE in Germany. That's beyond the point though, I just don't think it's viable to run subsidized regional trains from Hamburg all the way to Copenhagen, mostly because of the challenging situation around Hamburg
November 21, 2025 at 10:37 PM
A train from Lübeck to Nykøbing stops like 10 times or so, that's definitely not IC standard for Germany. The problem is that NAH.SH is only responsible for local and regional service, not long distance. There needs to be a distinction, legally.
November 21, 2025 at 10:34 PM
Copenhagen-Lübeck sure but extending regional service to Hamburg creates a ton of issues. It needs more expensive dual mode trains, there is no capacity on the line and DEFINITELY not at Hamburg Hbf and it wouldn't add much benefit
November 21, 2025 at 10:22 PM
Because there's already real IC lines for the entire line, and half hourly regional express service with much better capacity, and additional S-Bahn trains stopping at more stops? You can't run endless amounts of trains, lines have limited capacity and it costs a lot of money SH doesn't have
November 21, 2025 at 10:19 PM
I don't see it tbh. The demands on the different parts of the line are just too different. Hamburg-Lübeck has super high ridership and needs at least 8 car bilevel trains. Lübeck-Copenhagen doesn't have that demand but needs dual mode 200 kmh. So there should be two trains with a timed transfer
November 21, 2025 at 10:09 PM
Of course a reopening of the Line Eutin-Neustadt would be cool, but one train could only serve either Neustadt itself or the Fehmarnbelt line, not both. And I think for a regional service Neustadt would be the logical terminus, there could be an interchange though
November 21, 2025 at 9:14 PM
Honestly I think most people would take IC/ICE trains to travel from Copenhagen to Lübeck and would then just take a regional train to Kiel. There are plans to upgrade the Line Kiel-Lübeck to under 60 minutes travel time, this would mean 3h for Kiel-Copenhagen with a transfer in Lübeck
November 21, 2025 at 9:12 PM
So my hope for high quality regional connections across the Fehmarnbelt are pretty low. According to the current plans there will hourly Service Lübeck-Fehmarn but only every two hours onwards to Denmark. But locals are campaigning for hourly service so there is maybe a little hope

Similar story with the Esbjerg-Tønder-Niebüll line, Denmark updated the train control system, but removed the German equipment from the Arriva trains, forcing passengers to change trains in Tønder and forcing Nah.sh to organize a replacement (with is just a quick fix and not wheelchair accessible)

But it needed a lot of negotiation to make the Danish government pay the additional cost of the dual mode configuration. Apparently, nobody at DSB thought about Flensburg when ordering the IC5 and then they just didn't want to run cross border service anymore
November 21, 2025 at 9:00 PM
DSB threatened to just eliminate the Tinglev-Flensburg services, even though Nah.sh pays for them (without Nah.sh tickets being accepted). That was the only reason why some politicians suggested using battery trains and why Nah.sh will extend the RE7 from Flensburg to Tinglev

The idea of battery trains for this line was never serious, it is fully electrified! But Denmark seems to absolutely hate any cooperation on cross-border public transportation, I don't think they would let these trains run further than Nykøbing except if Schleswig-Holstein paid for it all
November 21, 2025 at 8:32 PM
They don't want to use battery trains but dual mode Alstom Coradia Max trains for the line to Tinglev, the Hamburg-Flensburg service will be extended there. For the Fehmarn line there is an option for additional 200 kmh dual mode trains of the same type, but so far they haven't been ordered
November 21, 2025 at 8:11 PM
There will be regional trains connecting Lübeck to Nykøbing stopping at all intermediate stops, but not from Kiel or Hamburg afaik. But since there are 2 regional trains per hour to both cities from Lübeck, with timed transfers, I don't think it will be a big issue.
