I remembered playing a lot of GX but the game got scratched and my memory card corrupted so by the time a got both replaced years later I was so rusty, I kept flying off the track. Need to go back to it but for now I've been wanting to beat the GBA ones... at some point soon (hopefully)

A game that does something similar is F-Zero 99 and it took some reworking. You don't get penalized as hard as when they 1st introduced S50, you still earn against bots/beating 3 rivals when matched with lower ranked, and the elite leaderboard is there for those who still want to be competitive.
