Sometimes you can see the remains of the bloom stalk during the winter. Plants often form small colonies but each plant only has the one leaf.

As fruits were produced and spread by wildlife; it is increasingly encroaching on places where native plants might have grown instead. If you have this, please consider removing it and planting a native tree instead.

Here you can see the capsule starting to ripen and open up small holes; the seeds will fall out of those holes, leaving the spiky capsule intact for you to step on (but the small seeds are very popular with small birds!).

This species has star-shaped leaves, distinctive winged twigs, rapid growth, and a beautiful shape – it would be a very popular landscape plant if it weren’t for those spiky seed capsules.

It has narrow leaves similar in shape to willow oak. It is ranked S2 by the GA DNR, indicating that it is imperiled in Georgia due to habitat destruction.

The long and tapered acorns take only one year to ripen, sometimes falling in great abundance.

The leaves turn a yellowish color but often remain on the tree into early winter. The small acorns take two years to mature.
