The UAE is an authoritarian autocracy, a petro-state with no income tax for citizens, to bribe them for the lack of democratic voice or free speech

It is 85% migrant, a segregated society with a ban on integration in principle and practice, few rights, equal opportunities, nor voice for incomers

I don't agree that they mean "bottom up". "Bottoms up!" is an instruction for the glasses of everyone in the group to be raised and turned such that their bottoms are facing upwards.

It's also pretty well established. The OED has examples from the 1850s.

No idea what to make of this except that (a) I'm fairly sure I've seen another random US film with a similar poster/tea towel in the background, and (b) one of the set dressers on The Dead Zone was called Gareth.

The breeding criterion for species has as its linguistic counterpart the criterion that, to be dialects of the same language, varieties have to be mutually intelligible. Both criteria seem sensible and useful on the surface but turn out to come unravelled quite easily under scrutiny!

People always seem to like seeing my cat. She's adorable but she's not honestly the best-natured of cats. hlHer trust is not trivially gained, having it is deeply rewarding, and I respect her for that.

Those of you who know my (beloved!) wife Lottie might notice some similarities.
