Heard a bit about this over the weekend. Looks like a really interesting book.

"Our purpose in The Modern British City is not merely to describe urban change but to explain why British cities, in all their extraordinary multifariousness, look and feel the way they do today"

Really excited for this expansive new book coming out in November www.lundhumphries.com/blogs/featur...
Front cover - white text on green background reads: The Modern British City 1945-2000. Edited by Simon Gunn, Peter Mandler and Otto Saumarez Smith.

Photo on cover depicts twe semi-detached (possibly formerly terraced) houses on a street corner in front of the modernist Park Hill estate in Sheffield.

Finally got my hands on a copy. I will discuss the book & my work in this area at the Contemporary British History Seminar at the IHR on 19 November. Sadly I’ll have to do it online because I’ve used up my travel quota (have a small baby). But thanks to @helenglew.bsky.social for the invitation

On the face of it, SP with only 9 MPs has a central role to play here once again because of the nature of the Norwegian political system. And despite a rather disastrous night for them losing 19 MPs & achieving just 5.6% of the vote

Jonas Gahr Støre will now face an extremely difficult task of trying to satisfy 4 other parties in SV, Rødt, MDG & particularly SP in coalition &/ or budget talks. Yet, the ‘bourgeois’ side does not look any easier to align & for a centre party like SP. The negotiations will take time.

Norwegian FrP projected to have 23.9%. Now second largest party after the Labour Party (27.9%). Høyre (Conservatives) down to 14.5%. Looks like a Labour minority gov’t or a leftist majority coalition. Centre-right & market liberals in trouble

Norway’s radical right party FrP text 430,000 young men today to warn them against voting for parties on the left in the Norwegian general election on election day. I’m pleased to say at almost 44 years of age that they consider me to be one of those young men :)

Norwegian general election day 🇳🇴 I’ve voted and looking forward to seeing an exit poll before I have to go to bed and get up bright and early to travel to the U.K.

It’s finally publication day for our ed. volume on Conservatism and Christian Democracy in North-West Europe! I don’t have my own copies yet but when they arrive I plan to post more about the book. I’d be grateful if you would recommend it to your university libraries. We hope to achieve a paperback

Yes she found the article.

Thanks for these suggestions. I really appreciate them. I am making a list :)

British women’s history (WW2) folks, can I pick your brains on sources? I have a student in Norway who would like to do a small project on women’s roles in the war & she’s interested in WAAF, WVS, etc. are there any records or sources available online that would be useful? Places to start? Thanks 🙏

Congrats @benjthomas.bsky.social Thanks for highlighting your article and for a citation of the book. I look forward to reading it soon

I lament the academic use, but what terrifies me the most is existing in some sort of fake world where nobody really knows anything for real. Personally, I’ll be okay because I’m a technological dinosaur, but I worry about my 1 year old and his education: www.theguardian.com/technology/2...
18 months. 12,000 questions. A whole lot of anxiety. What I learned from reading students’ ChatGPT logs
Students increasingly use AI chatbots for anything from academic queries to emotional quandaries. But are they missing out on the chance to make their own mistakes? Three undergrads reveal all …

Looks like a very interesting phd. Congrats. You might find our forthcoming edited volume interesting, esp in relation to Conservative students, transnational Conservatism etc

Ha, sorry! But I got a lot out of your book, which is why I thought it had the quote. I wrote this essay a while ago so I had to go back to it today. These things take time to reach publication!
garylove.bsky.social
Agreed. There are many forms of political writing we could not cover in a book like this but hopefully it proves to be useful for others who are actively engaged in tackling them!

@benjthomas.bsky.social And the original citation is footnote 3 here
garylove.bsky.social
@benjthomas.bsky.social My mind played tricks on me. My footnote reads: 'Quoted in John Barnes and Richard Cockett, ‘The Making of Party Policy’, in Anthony Seldon and Stuart Ball (eds.), Conservative Century: The Conservative Party since 1900 (Oxford, 1994), p. 348.'

It was also a nice surprise and an honour to get these endorsements from @fieryparticle.bsky.social @saimanasar.bsky.social Ben Jackson and Martin Francis. A ‘thousands thanks’ as we say over here in Norway
garylove.bsky.social
I have seen the original document in the archive. But it was in Barr’s history that I was reminded of it
garylove.bsky.social
It sounds like I should consult my own paper to settle this once and for all, sometime soon 😀
garylove.bsky.social
Well, I’ve kind of adapted it from its original meaning. But I read it in James Barr who cited the original CPA document (I think)
garylove.bsky.social
I was also delighted to see it because I confess I wasn’t aware of it myself 🤯
