The FORC 2026 call for papers is out! responsiblecomputing.org/forc-2026-ca... Two reviewing cycles with two deadlines: Nov 11 and Feb 17. If you haven't been, FORC is a great venue for theoretical work in "responsible AI" --- fairness, privacy, social choice, CS&Law, explainability, etc.
FORC 2026: Call for Papers
The 7th annual Symposium on Foundations of Responsible Computing (FORC) will be held on June 3-5, 2026 at Harvard University. Brief summary for those who are familiar with past editions (prior to 2…

Say a paper has a long and convoluted proof for a statement. Before, either it's fundamentally tough to prove, or they're a bad technical writer. Now, there's the lurking suspicion that your time is being wasted as you're forced to read AI slop.

One frustrating AI impact is the resulting lack of trust, esp when trust feels lower than ever.

it's ubiquitous, but e.g., a bad review may have prev been blamed on a lazy or ignorant reviewer. Now the accusation is that it's LLM generated: maximally lazy to the point of malice.

Query-Efficient Locally Private Hypothesis Selection via the Scheffe Graph

Gautam Kamath, Alireza F. Pour, Matthew Regehr, David P. Woodruff

http://arxiv.org/abs/2509.16180

We propose an algorithm with improved query-complexity for the problem of
hypothesis selection under local differential privacy constraints. Given a set
of $k$ probability distributions $Q$, we describe an algorithm that satisfies
local differential privacy, performs $\tilde{O}(k^{3/2})$ non-adaptive queries
to individuals who each have samples from a probability distribution $p$, and
outputs a probability distribution from the set $Q$ which is nearly the closest
to $p$. Previous algorithms required either $\Omega(k^2)$ queries or many
rounds of interactive queries.
Technically, we introduce a new object we dub the Scheff\'e graph, which
captures structure of the differences between distributions in $Q$, and may be
of more broad interest for hypothesis selection tasks.

While I'm here, let me advertise that Reed CS is hiring this year in Systems! It's a wonderful set of people in the deparment, really engaged students, and (unlike many college) you can live in a city. Deadline October 17

Definitely apply if you're looking for a "PUI" position

I'm in Portland, Oregon visiting Reed College (@reed.edu) as part of the external review for their computer science department!

This picture looks like a typical New England liberal arts college, but the PNW remains one of the most beautiful parts of the US.

📢Adam Smith, @gautamkamath.com, and I are putting together a list of job market candidates in Foundations of Responsible Computing! Last year's list was a great success so we're keeping it going!

If you want to be included, or nominate someone, see link in the replies!

Choose the aisle seat if you're a people pleaser, choose the window seat if you're confrontational, and choose the middle seat if you're a masochist.

Congrats and farewell to my Masters student Jimmy Z. Di. He presented his thesis on memorization in diffusion models (arxiv.org/abs/2508.12148) in addition to his other unlearning work (arxiv.org/abs/2406.17216 arxiv.org/abs/2212.10717). He goes on to a PhD at @uwmadison.bsky.social. We'll miss you!
