Apparently The Gjoa, a ship that he used to transit the northwest passage, anchored off outside the Golden Gate in 1906. The Norwegian community in SF purchased the ship and kept it at the current location of the memorial until 1973! It was later sent to the Norwegian maritime museum.

Why does Roald Amundsen, the first explorer to reach the south pole, have a statue in Golden Gate park?? A mix of fatigue and curiosity during today's run made me stop and find out!
