At a talk on poetry which fits with my part time life as a literature student but is also framed on theories from my full time job as a sociologist of work & care. What a nice way to spend an afternoon.

TBF, Heriot-Watt has always been pretty firm friends with any number of amoral organisations.

if you’ve ever watched the apprentice, that’s the world without arts or humanities degrees

(Very, very broad brush 300 character post that simplifies a number of trends!)

Note to Badenoch, you can't actually shut down sociology. UK sociology self immolated itself in the early 20th C through it's eugenic turn. Yet, English departments created their own sociology - cultural studies - to fill the gap. Every discipline ends up creating its own sociology.

Not to be outdone, Sir Keir Starmer announces that he will go harder and faster in delivering patriotic renewal by detonating tactical nukes underneath every university library library’s 800 shelfmark section.

Watching Badenoch's policy announcements and seeing them as having much the same effects as me, a 40 year old, writing what I'd like to Santa.

(I need to work on my replies, your comments got me thinking and my thoughts appear a bit know it all when I really am wondering myself. I do have a strong West Wing idealist self that I keep under lock and key that sometimes escapes)

Yeah. I don't know whether it's the Cold War that nuked the political imagination or curiosity... Or something else.

I do think this is a thing and probably reflects the professionalisation of politics and the idea - or 'lore' - that guides their way of working and lessened the intellectual arguments they make. I do think it's a good thing for a healthy politics to have a certain respect of actual conservatives..

There's something that gets me in the West Wing feels when a conservative has some principles.

“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social asks Lord Heseltine about remarks he made at Conservative Party Conference.

Just got recommended Richard Osman and Marina Hyde talking about Taylor Swift and Charlie XCX and I have never wanted to listen to anything less in my life.

I'm just so into the idea of a whale dropping - hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy style - on to the treasury to save the tiny snail from the evil developers.

Julia Donaldson can you please write this up

snail and the whale 2: the whale saves the snail

I did the bureaucracy lecture yesterday and I said, well, why did the red tape exist in the first place.

To stop the Rachel Reeves of this world and save the snails would be one example.

But, again, it's why defending bureaucracy is so important. Good relationships with developers is anti-democratic, it's informal and very personal decision making. It's why we're headed for worse because the people who are meant to defend these institutions are drunk on the free hospitality.

Distracted boyfriend meme.

A man captioned "the world" staring at a woman in a red dress captioned "Use an ill suited word that sounds cool" while a woman in blue captioned "Goffman's concept of impression management - itself rooted in the idea that people cynically perfrom their social identity" looks on aghast
