While I was walking around Crystal Bridges, I came across this huge chestnut tree — probably the biggest I've ever seen. It also kind of made me think of Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving. For those celebrating, Happy Chuseok!

Camille Gilmore, one of my Public Policy Ph.D. students on the research team, delivered an excellent presentation at the annual research conference about the ongoing NSF project.

I am delighted to share that Dr. Hank Jenkins-Smith (University of Oklahoma), Dr. Chris Weible (University of Colorado Denver), Dr. Edella Schlager (University of Arizona), and Dr. Michael Jones (Clemson University) will serve on this inaugural Advisory Board.

While primarily consultative, the board will play an important role in advising on strategic planning, special initiatives, and the long-term positioning of PSJ within the policy community.

This board will bring together all former Editors of PSJ since the PSO/PSJ reform era, both to recognize their service and to create a collegial space where their experience and insights can continue to guide the journal’s trajectory.

Still, the sense of responsibility as a husband, father, and provider for my family is something I can never set aside. That’s why, when the results turn out well, I feel grateful for being given another year of life.

I’ve lived a life where I worked very hard and achieved many of the things I set out to do, so I don’t think I would have many regrets even if something were to happen.

Waiting for the results of my annual health check has become more and more nerve-wracking each year. It’s not that I’m seriously ill or anything like that, but at my age, I remind myself that if something concerning comes up, I must be prepared to accept it.

Rinjisha Roy, one of my Public Policy Ph.D. students, helps with my research methods seminar as a TA this semester. She is explaining exercise questions for the first time to our graduate students. She did an excellent job.

Excited to share that Victor Akakpo, one of my Public Policy Ph.D. students, successfully passed his qualifying exam. It was a unanimous decision, and I am very proud of what he has achieved so far. Congratulations, Victor!

Ultimately, what matters most is not the novelty of a method but how clearly authors explain why they chose it, how transparently they report preprocessing and validation, and how well they connect their findings to theory.

I encourage those interested to explore these works, as they provide a broader picture of where the field is heading and what counts as rigorous, impactful practice.

Beyond these examples, PSJ has published a range of articles on text analysis, from topic modeling to discourse analysis to hybrid approaches that blend automated and manual methods.

Together, these pieces illustrate how the field has evolved, from early applications of text mining to today’s debates over LLMs and other advanced tools.

Nowlin (2016) demonstrates how quantitative text analysis can model competing issue definitions, offering insights into theory-method alignment.
