With the exception of the RN, no party wants new elections, and all are positioning themselves in view of the next presidential elections. An increasing number of actors push for Macron's resignation so to have a new presidential election in 2026 (or even earlier), but Macron is unlikely to go.

We may soon have the first technocratic (ie not based on an explicit coalition of parties in parliament) of theFrench Fifth Republic. ⬇️

France led by the RN would tilt the balance in Europe, but Meloni should be careful what she wishes for; not sure she and MLP want the same thing. As for the union of the rights, there’s no sign of that for now.

Probably but not sure it will be enough to keep in the whole range of parties from the PS to the LR. At this stage the problem is not concessions or negotiations, it is positioning vis-à-vis the next presidential election.

An excellent summary of the debates on fascism and the contemporary radical right that we had in Rome earlier this year, at a conference organized by the George L. Mosse Center at the University of Wisconsin earlier this year.
60 Years: Fascism Seminar Revisited
The "60 Years: Fascism Seminar Revisited" conference marked the sixtieth anniversary of George L. Mosse's groundbreaking 1963 Stanford seminar by bringing together over 30 leading scholars from the Un...

Agree. The US is clearly on a slippery slope now.

I wroite a short piece on @verfassungsblog.de on the challenges facing the French new Prime Minister. The institutions of the Fifth Republic have so far been very resilient in the face of continued crisis, but fatigue is starting to show.

France 🇫🇷 has a new Prime Minister.

Many see the task he is facing as impossible.

Quote: “The polarization that accelerated after the 2022 elections and deepened following the 2024 dissolution could push the Fifth Republic toward an end – de facto, if not de jure.”

Despite all the fatigue, sometimes irritation, and historical memory, let us once again restore the proper importance of this obvious fact. Ukraine is fighting Russia today, a Russia that directly threatens Poland.

Unclear how Lecornu can do better than his predecessors in assembling a parliamentary coalition. Pressures for new elections or even for Macron's resignation are likely to mount in the coming months. More here ⬇️

The Socialist Party's leaders had pressed strongly for a Socialist PM. They now warn that Macron is "defying social anger", which does not bode well for the new government. The leader of the Greens, Marine Tondelier, talks openly about a "provocation" on the part of Macron. /3

Lecornu was Macron's preferred PM already nine months ago, when Bayrou, threatening Macron to withdraw his support, forced his hand to become PM himself. French politics really set back the clock to last year, only with more fatigue due to an additional year of instability. /2

On the occasion of a recent keynote lecture at the University of Helsinki, I gave an interview to the Finnish online media Uusi Juttu @uusijuttu.fi on my research on countering illiberalism in liberal democracies. It is here (in Finnish--Google translate may help).

Kansanvallan itsepuolustus. Miten liberaali demokratia pelastetaan?
Iltapäivisin julkaistavassa Pihvi-ohjelmassa valitsemme yhden olennaisen uutisen ja selvitämme, mistä se oikeastaan kertoo.

Bayrou did not even receive all the votes of the parties that explicitly supported his government. A difficult puzzle to solve for Macron, like in 2024.
gcapoccia.bsky.social
The French National Assembly just voted on the confidence to the Bayrou government. 364 votes against, 194 vote in favor. So Bayrou falls after only 9 months. The Parliament will have to approve a budget before Dec 31. I discuss the possible scenarios in this piece for @verfassungsblog.de

France 🇫🇷 is heading into a new political crisis, with a vote of confidence scheduled for this Sunday that Prime Minister Bayrou is expected to lose.

I wrote a short piece on the latest chapter in the seemingly endless crisis that has gripped French politics since 2022. The government is likely to collapse on Monday, leaving Macron once again with no good options at a time of international turmoil. ⬇️
