Seeing characters like Marlee Matlin’s Joey Lucas in “The West Wing” break barriers and challenge the narrative shows audiences that disability and professional excellence are not mutually exclusive.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month—a reminder that what we see on screen shapes perceptions around who belongs in the workplace.

Our research found that disabled adult TV characters are less likely to be shown with a job compared to non-disabled characters.

Characters of all kinds–especially all abilities–should be included in the stories we tell.

Only 2.5% of characters on screen are disabled, making disability nearly invisible in children’s TV.
But disability is part of everyday life, and kids deserve to see it reflected in the shows they watch.

Characters of color are well-represented in STEM roles in children’s TV—a powerful reminder that representation shapes possibility. Shows like “Ada Twist, Scientist” empower kids of color to see themselves as scientists, engineers and innovators. 🌟🔬

It’s time for more equal gender representation in all types of roles—because every child deserves to see themselves in the stories they love. 💜✨

When kids grow up seeing more boys than girls on screen—even monsters, talking animals, or aliens—it shapes how they imagine what’s possible. This is what led Geena to start the Institute over 20 years ago.

Our latest TV report showed a positive increase in female characters, but male characters still outnumber female characters in children’s TV, especially among animated nonhuman roles.

Let’s greenlight more shows for kids with Latinx characters, because when we tell stories that reflect the world around us, more children will feel accepted and empowered.

#seeitbeit #HispanicHeritageMonth #LatinxHeritageMonth
geenadavisorg.bsky.social
As we celebrate Latinx Heritage Month, we’re calling for more representation of Latinx characters in children’s TV. Our annual children’s TV report found that just 9% of characters in new kids shows in 2024 are Latinx. That’s well below the share of people in the U.S. who identify as Latinx.
