One needs to experience it firsthand. We traveled twice to Schwaben, in small towns all around the Bodensee. I agree it is difficult to explain such wonderful cultural happenings. I recommend a book (likely out of print), "Scwhabisch Alemannische Fasnach" by Kutter.
