Yes I agree with this. There are similarities. But with conferences it's less about prestige, and more about maximising opportunities to hear about new research and meet/speak to people.

I also saw yesterday that the cheapest special rate rooms for VSS are now $235 per night! A week's trip there would cost about £3,000 per person. It has become a luxury for rich labs. I feel terrible guilt for not being able to give my students this experience.

Exactly! And it's mostly women who are forced into dropping hours or giving up work completely to cover childcare when the costs become this high. It gives me the rage just thinking about the wider situation.

It's so unsustainable! And nobody seems to have a plan to improve the situation either. I'm very jealous of the countries that properly fund childcare. Hope your mat leave goes well!
