Today, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in Chiles v. Salazar: Click through to learn what that could mean for folks in Minnesota and North Dakota.

For LGBTQ+ youth and families who've faced conversion therapy, we know this is heavy. You are seen, you are supported, and your safety matters.
Vertical image of supreme court facade with text on a dark teal background that reads: Today, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in Chiles v. Salazar, a case challenging Colorado’s law that protects minors from therapists who claim they can change a young person’s sexual orientation or gender identity if they just “try hard enough.” The Court’s decision could have far-reaching consequences, including for youth in Minnesota and North Dakota. Text on a dark teal background that reads: Conversion therapy is a dangerous, discredited practice linked to anxiety, depression, and higher rates of suicide among LGBTQ+ youth.

It’s not a thing of the past. Conversion therapy is still happening in communities across the U.S.

Every major medical and mental health association condemns conversion therapy and supports laws protecting youth. Text on a dark teal background that reads: Laws protecting minors from conversion have broad support.
23 states have banned the practice, including Minnesota. North Dakota prohibits licensed social workers from engaging in conversion therapy.

But, if the Supreme Court strikes down Colorado’s ban, states like ours could be barred from enforcing our bans, which would allow licensed mental health providers to engage in this harmful practice. Vertical image of supreme court facade with text on a dark teal background that reads: The Supreme Court will issue its ruling in summer 2026. We’ll hold a SCOTUS Chat to break down the decision and what it means for youth in Minnesota, North Dakota, and beyond.

"It’s my hope that by telling my story, Americans will recognize that this is in fact happening in our country — and that it could keep happening unless they use their voices to demand this invasive bigotry stops."
Opinion | What happened to me at Buffalo Wild Wings was wrong. That’s why I’m speaking out.
I’m used to being stared at or whispered about in bathrooms and other spaces. It has happened more times than I can count. But this was different.

“What happened to Gerika Mudra was not just wrong, it was unlawful,” said Sara Jane Baldwin, senior staff atty. “Minnesota law protects people from exactly this kind of discrimination in public spaces. No one should be harassed, humiliated, or forced to prove themselves just to use the bathroom.”

Across the country, we’re seeing a surge in anti-trans panic—fueled by misinformation and political opportunism—that encourages people to fear, surveil, and punish anyone who doesn’t conform to rigid, racialized ideas of what a girl or woman “should” look like.
genderjustice.us
Scared, trapped, and humiliated, Gerika was forced to unzip her hoodie to show she had a chest just to make the harassment stop. This wasn’t just wrong—it was illegal. And it’s part of a larger, dangerous trend.

While some politicians weaponize “fairness in women’s sports” to attack trans athletes, the real violations of Title IX are happening in plain sight.

In MN, girls’ high school teams are forced to play on subpar fields with fewer resources than boys’ teams. That’s not fairness—it’s discrimination.

In Minnesota, transgender youth can still access the care they need thanks to strong state-level protections. In North Dakota, we will continue to fight for trans youth and their right to access care in the courtroom with our case, T.D. v. Wrigley.
