The Razor Collection

These Razors are tools to cut through the noise of modern life.

But there are dozens more models you need to think clearly.

I’ve compiled the best 100+ mental models, biases, and frameworks into a database.

7/ Grice's Razor

Address the best version of the opposing argument, not the worst.

Don't play "gotcha" with someone's poor phrasing or typos. Respond to what they meant.

If you defeat the strongest version of their argument, you actually win.
January 20, 2026 at 11:56 AM
6/ Gell-Mann Amnesia

You read a news article about your area of expertise and see it is full of errors.

Then you turn the page and trust the same newspaper on a topic you don't know.

Don't forget the incompetence you just witnessed. Be skeptical of everything.
January 20, 2026 at 11:56 AM
5/ Newton's Flaming Laser Sword

If a question cannot be settled by experiment or observation, it is not worth debating.

Don't waste energy arguing about definitions or hypotheticals that have no consequences in reality.

Focus on what is testable.
January 20, 2026 at 11:56 AM
4/ The Sagan Standard

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

If someone claims it rained yesterday, you can take their word for it. If they claim they invented a perpetual motion machine, you need more than a blurry photo.
January 20, 2026 at 11:56 AM
3/ Hitchens's Razor

"What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence."

The burden of proof is on the person making the claim.

If they have no proof, you need no argument to defeat them. You can simply ignore them.
January 20, 2026 at 11:56 AM
2/ Hanlon's Razor

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

The guy cutting you off isn't evil; he's probably just distracted or a bad driver.

This razor saves you from unnecessary anger and paranoia.
January 20, 2026 at 11:56 AM
1/ Occam's Razor

The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

If you hear hoofbeats in Texas, think horses, not zebras.

Don't overcomplicate solutions. Complexity is often just a mask for confusion.

8. On Opinions

"Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth."

You don't have to turn every observation into a judgment.
You can just let things be.
January 19, 2026 at 11:57 AM
7. On Focus

"Concentrate every minute like a Roman... on doing what's in front of you with precise and genuine seriousness."

Anxiety lives in the future. Regret lives in the past. Peace is found in the work right in front of you.

Do the work. Do it well.
January 19, 2026 at 11:57 AM
6. Dealing with People

"When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: The people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest..."

Expect people to be flawed.
When you expect the rain, you don't get angry when you get wet.
January 19, 2026 at 11:57 AM
5. On Control

"You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength."

The world is chaotic. You cannot control the weather or the economy.
Your reaction is the only thing you own.

Master your reaction, master your life.
January 19, 2026 at 11:57 AM
4. Memento Mori (Urgency)

"You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think."

Death isn't a depressing thought. It's a clarifier.

Stop wasting time on nonsense. You don't have an infinite budget of days.
January 19, 2026 at 11:57 AM
3. The Best Revenge

"The best revenge is not to be like your enemy."

If you react to anger with anger, they have won. They have dragged you down to their level.

Don't let someone else's bad behavior lower your standards.
January 19, 2026 at 11:57 AM
2. On Anxiety

"Today I escaped anxiety. Or no, I discarded it, because it was within me, not outside."

Stress doesn't come from your boss, the market, or the traffic. It comes from your judgment of them.

Change the judgment, remove the stress.
January 19, 2026 at 11:57 AM
1. The Obstacle is the Way

"The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way."

Stop wishing for things to be easy.
Use the challenge as fuel.

The struggle isn't blocking the path, it *is* the path.

It’s not just colonial history. It happens in business today:

• Pay programmers by lines of code? You get bloated software.
• Pay salespeople on pure volume? You get bad customers and high churn.

Good intentions do not guarantee good outcomes.

They release thousands of captive-bred cobras back into the city.

The result? Delhi now has *significantly more* cobras than when the extermination program started.

When an attempted solution to a problem makes the problem worse.
