Reminder that last year I made an iPhone app that always points at the centre of the Milky Way

It peaked at 87 in the US App Store free apps chart (Travel category) haha

Here’s what Ars Technica said about it

New app always points to the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy
iPhone compass app made with AI assistance locates the heart of the Milky Way.

you merely adopted the dark, I was born in it, molded by it

Always about two thirds though Goblin Market, when Lizzie returns to save Laura, I regret picking this as bedtime reading for my kid, and suddenly remembering that I had the exact same feeling last time at the same point

Are we buddies on Strava? We should be!

Last few weeks have been recovery so it doesn’t count… but before that it was a year+ of 20 mi/wk mixing up distances. Keeping the streak is what works for me

The kitchen table scene in particular

Tell your buddy well done, it hangs together so well and I hope it will be watched for a long time

Tim Key’s face… Long-time fan but who knew he could act like that. Give him some serious chewy roles pls

And the year view averages out the weekly datapoints so you can’t see these shorter blips…

So useful to see in retrospect anyhow, I wish I’d noticed halfway through that something was up

There was a system that worked like this, auto grouping for simultaneous conversations on the same voice calls. In 2003!

Wrote a bit about it it here — would love to try these kind of ideas for video

Got a 3D printer and it’s DOA. I can see the misassembled part and there’s no way to fix. Support closed for Chinese holidays so a while to get it replaced too… Boooo

An objection from #RobinSloan no less!

Now author etc but also in previous lives a media inventor — remember Fish? Spring ‘83?

Why can’t I get a portrait mode TV?

Here’s a plan for BBC to launch a new portrait only channel, BBC Vertical. And all the other networks too

Because why not that’s why

I’m magpieing that word for my own use! I love the implicit compliment in saying it to someone, it’s so deft
genmon.fyi
Only discovered when kiddo used it conversationally with me, and it turns out they apply it to art, inventions, English lessons… Gonna have a little blogger on my hands (I showed her my links collection)

Turns out that my kid’s year 1 teacher used magpie as a verb frequently, such as “I magpied that thing you made and added it to X for my own invention,” and (a) what a great way to introduce collecting creative references and (b) so good to have a positive counterweight to “copying” as an idea

I know right!! The framing of the article made what I thought was a fairly jolly email into something pretty adversarial!

Not that my reckon carries any weight, but Times Higher Education asked me who I thought could possibly replace the irreplaceable Melvyn Bragg on In Our Time, and here’s what I said
