Just watched the Donner Cut of SUPERMAN II for the first time, and I was honestly stunned how much better it is and drastically different it is than the Lester Cut.

He and Rudd and Romany Malco are all throwing fastballs for two hours. Malco's lack of a movie star career after it (especially compared to the other two) really speaks to Hollywood's failure to do right by black actors.

As I recall, the Unrated Cut (which is far too long, but was my go-to when I was young) does flesh him out more as a pretentious wannabe writer who thinks that gives him insight into the human condition.

The scene with the trans sex worker (and particularly the conversation afterward) is a really ugly black mark on an otherwise pretty terrific movie, but it is worth noting that even in that scene, Andy makes a point to say how nice she was.

Paul Rudd's character in particular is a total misogynist and porn-addled loser basically stalking an ex while also barely concealing his hatred for her, yet somehow Rudd manages to make him still somewhat sympathetic, which is movie star magic.

In hindsight, this is extremely obvious, but when I was 15 (and, yeah, also a virgin), I really just appreciated it as a bawdy sex comedy about a loser repeatedly failing to get with women until he finally succeeds.

Rewatched 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN for the first time in probably a decade or more. I don't think I quite realized when I was young how all three of Andy's work buddies have toxic relationships to women, and the real arc of the movie is Andy rejecting them in favor of real adult love.

Unfortunately, the older people are actually much more stubborn about this stuff. The young people (particularly in college, since they're here voluntarily) can actually be influenced into thinking about their own future and their cognitive development.

Nothing will ever stop 100% of students who want to use A.I., just as there will always be students who cheat by other means, but if you actually take the time to explain why this stuff hurts them and makes their education useless, most will listen.

I gave my students a very impassioned plea against using AI for their work at the beginning of this semester. Now some of their major assignments are coming in, and not only is their work coming up clean on every AI detector, it's also very good stuff. There's hope out there.
