A dark and potentially rainy day in Savannah. We could use one of those.

Ok that helps. I thought it was much shorter.

I actually baffled by how that thing can weigh that much. Is it 20 ft tall?

I have been connected to the Political Science community, a connection that my schools simply have not had the money to fund. It is truly wonderful.

Has anything great happened in your life because of social media?

Still no internet on campus for Faculty and Staff. It’s fun to see who can adapt and who can’t.

We cannot negotiate our way out of this. The strategy should be to unmask their brutality and hatred for everyone to see by engaging in non-violent civil disobedience. Show the world who they are.

No internet on campus this morning, so my old school approach to teaching is winning. Good preparation for the apocalypse.

“Let me look right into the camera and tell you very clearly: The Orangeys aren’t concerned about your healthcare. That’s not a talking point. I wish you ill.”

Historian here, this was a long interview on how Trump is criminalizing political dissent, politicizing the armed forces and civil service, asserting unchecked executive power, as a path to create the dystopian world of Project 2025. A couple of sentences made it to the final clip!

Went to the grocery store tonight. It’s getting ex-pen-sive.

I have a student, who is now a junior, who is trying to let microsoft word assign names for all of his written assignments for his entire college career. I just graded "Document (137)" in the dropbox. I appreciate students like this.

Just spent 50 minutes trying to convince college freshmen that the university will take your money and give you a degree AND let you cross that stage completely unprepared for what is coming next. The learning and shaping who they want to be is really up to them. Professors are here to help.

This video of Chicagoans intervening to save a man from being abducted off the streets by ICE is making the rounds on Instagram.

Are “religion” and “church” the same thing? One is fairly clearly identifiable. The problem is that the First Amendment is talking about the more opaque one.

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“Nobody — not legislators, not judges, not scholars — can quite agree on what religion is,” the philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah writes in a guest essay. “How can you address church-and-state controversies if you’re not sure what the ‘church’ part refers to?”
Opinion | The Problem Lurking Beneath the Church-and-State Debates in Texas
What exactly is religion, anyway?

I’m proud of my wife. She makes these and others like it. But we (as a family) admit that it is weird to have a family day to show employees the products that they make.

The legitimacy of the power of courts depends on their giving of legal reasons for their decisions. Lacking any democratic authorization, the absence of reasons means it's naked power being asserted, which relieves us of any obligation to obey. We may comply for prudence's sake, but we don't have to

Justice Jackson is obviously correct. SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE are now illegally going to have their status terminated early — as every court other than the Supreme Court has found so far.

Not a single word of justification from the Justices in the majority to justify this. NONE. Not one.

I’ve had to listen to way too many lectures by Harvey Mansfield on manliness to fall into the trap of believing that there are no conservative voices in academia.

My students read Noem v Vasquez Perdomo for today. What a stupid attempt at doing law.

So, I did our Constitution Day lecture last week and I did not hold back on what I thought (but I was professional about it), and now a couple of other profs are wanting to hold more events to have honest discussions on campus about what’s happening. Permission slips.
