Hello new followers! I’m Lizzy. My expertise is ore geology and mineral exploration, but I’m interested in all aspects of earth science. I’ve been a field mapper, lab scientist, adjunct faculty, and currently a SAHM because the job market is always up and down 😄

It took me 4 tries to get that post correct. My kingdom for an edit button!

Gold broke the $3000 an ounce barrier back in March. I’m no economist but I’m pretty sure that’s not a good sign.

Gold is over $4000 an ounce!

October is here and nothing sets the Halloween mood like some spessartine on black quartz! On view in the Robert R. Wiener Mineral Gallery at the Bruce Museum.

Happy #MineralMonday!

Imagine being someone who works on this stuff at the USGS (if any still exist)
geolizzy.bsky.social
Any importantly, the “rare earth” project they fast tracked was actually a gold mine with not a single assay of rare earth minerals to make resources or reserves
geolizzy.bsky.social
Only when the assays come back really screaming and my gut feeling was right
geolizzy.bsky.social
I just attacked myself with that one
geolizzy.bsky.social
Meanwhile, it’s just people who don’t own anything other than outdoor clothes and boots and love fleece vests and can’t stop talking about “assays” and “ounces per ton” and “geophys anomalies” and their “gut feelings”. They maybe own a pan that’s probably dusty and rarely used anymore.

No idea 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think it’s just posturing. We don’t have significant deposits of the ores they want or several of the metals they have tariffed. Maybe someone is investing in exploration companies hoping to benefit?
geolizzy.bsky.social
And gonna talk about mine baby mine while coal miners are still waiting on those silica regulations y’all want to go away. What 🤡 behavior
geolizzy.bsky.social
And while we are talking mining, we never stopped mining! We never stopped exploring in the US. One of the things the USGS does is help look for new deposits (if any of them are left). And spoiler alert, a hefty number of exploration and mining companies aren’t even American companies
geolizzy.bsky.social
A reminder that you need to actually have deposits to mine ore. And if you have an ore deposit it takes years of exploration and then years of planning and permitting before you can ever start digging. Mining takes long term planning and mistakes cost $$$, no one’s gonna be rushing things.

Burgum: "We have to get back to mining in our country. It's not just drill baby drill. It's mine baby mine with President Trump."

They say this but aren’t approving things much faster 🤭

Alt text: Scoop: White House memo says furloughed federal workers aren’t entitled to back pay
repsuhas.bsky.social
This administration wants to punish federal workers. These threats are illegal point blank. We could be working together to end this Republican government shutdown but Russ Vought and POTUS would rather threaten and harass the federal workforce.
geolizzy.bsky.social
You’re not wrong 🤣

How many days until it’s over $4000 an ounce? 🤯
geolizzy.bsky.social
Gold price is currently $3,982.20 🙃
geolizzy.bsky.social
I bet they heard heavy REEs and jumped in
geolizzy.bsky.social
I’d place my bets on the second option
