They were very much of a time. I adored them - and her - but they might not work as well today.

Dear wonderful kind funny generous Jilly Cooper. May the heavenly champagne corks pop.

Oh lovely Jilly. She always lit up a room, quite apart from the books.

This is a breathtaking abuse of the law and power by the President of the United States.

America is on the brink of martial law.

Do not be silent.

This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

Could not all living past presidents SAY something? Anything. How can they all remain silent? Especially Obama.
georgeisediting.bsky.social
It is so dreadful, Sarah, so very dreadful.

You can't be 49! Don't be silly.

My mother saw it as a tiny child when it first came out and remained traumatised by it decades later .

Concrete & Clay was the first single I owned. It came with the Dansette record player I got for my 7th birthday.

Why in god’s good name would you do otherwise, Mrs Fish?

It is so bloody depressing.

So sorry you had to deal with this, Olivette. Grim. But hurrah for the lovely school kids.

A small glimmer of hope in the appointment of Dame Sarah Mullally, especially having watched the news from Chicago and Manchester. Seizing at anything positive right now.

I am sickened by today’s attack in Manchester. Antisemitism is on the rise around the world, and we must do all we can to stomp it out. I am grateful to first responders and congregants who showed incredible bravery, and I am praying for those who were killed.

Fucksake, Chris Mason, on the 6 o'clock news arguing for nuance when it comes to Farage ... #whentheyshowyouwhotheyarebelievethen

Yup. Love, courage and sympathy to all my American friends.

I can’t believe I’m watching interviews of city mayors talking about how they are coordinating with other mayors to discuss how to protect their residents FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

I know we are “used to it” but it is absolutely insane

In La Repubblica, really extraordinary text (look at alt text), essentially saying calling this fascism is too subtle, that it’s worse and Hegseth is a lunatic.
Who am I to argue?

www.repubblica.it/rubriche/l-a...
Pentagon chief Hegseth's "speech to the troops" is further proof that the word fascism is completely inadequate to describe the new advance. Fascism had less than a century of socialist uprisings, workers' and farmers' strikes to settle. Against the "reds," in short, on behalf of the bosses.

These people want to settle accounts with two and a half centuries of democracy (starting with their own): with human rights, civil rights, women's liberation, the end of true patriarchy, the hegemony of the state in the use of force and weapons, the law as the equal rule for all. In short, they want to settle accounts with civilization, which disturbs their primitive male exuberance—the same as the colonists who built America by exterminating the natives. These people aren't a political phenomenon, they're an animalistic phenomenon: the extreme regurgitation of the atavistic law—that of the strongest—rebelling against the very principles of mutual respect. This lunatic who rails against "the fat," against the bearded, against the cowardly and the gentle, and calls for war as the only measure of valor, isn't just a fascist, he's much worse.

He's the uncivilized person who repudiates civilization, who considers the very principles of respect and tolerance a symptom of decadence. But he is decadent, a parody of an archaic culture aped by embittered males who are a hundred times more decadent, improbable, ridiculous, and weak than the worst woke activist. But they don't know it, they're in no position to understand it. And on top of being stupid and evil, they're armed. Do the math on what awaits us, the unarmed ones.
