Ungainly on land
2. Far from it: here’s the email she sent inviting me to take part. Nothing suggesting it would in any way be an attack on my position. There was lots of further correspondence, but none of it *even mentioned the topic of the film*: population growth. Had I known, I would have prepared.

The residual rise is due to: A. the birth rate 60-100 years ago, which created a larger current base population. This means more children being born even as birth *rates* are in radical decline.
The global total fertility rate, by the way, is now 2.2, just above the replacement rate of 2.1.

8. Farming has to be profitable - or farmers won’t do it - and productive, or there won’t be enough for 8, 9 or 10 billion people to eat. But we also need to see much lower impacts on the living world, as food production is the #1 driver of most causes of environmental destruction.

Still growing, but much more slowly than before. Note the massive impact of Trump's re-election.
Do keep dragging your friends out of the seventh circle of X and onto this platform.

4. What it means is that, short of murdering a billion people or more, there is nothing anyone can do – or could have done in our lifetimes – to alter the broad trajectory. People have devoted their lives to fighting a mathematical function. 4/12

On the ferry, crossing the Firth of Clyde after a fantastic short break on Arran. We stayed in a brilliant vegan B&B - Stonewater House in Lamlash. Saw otters, red squirrels, eider, mergansers, many shore birds and woodland birds. A stunning place. share.google/AWcMAxYmL56h...

Tonight we're celebrating 10 years of Rewilding Britain (@rewildingbritain.org.uk). I don't think I've ever come across an organisation which has shifted both public attitudes and tangible outcomes on an issue so fast. I'm proud to be associated.

Here's my argument with Sir Bernard Jenkin MP about the report showing how the racist intimidation of Black and Brown NHS workers on home visits has been exacerbated by the far right's wall of flags.

1. Placing these two graphs side by side shows why we have a prisons crisis. They can also be seen as a kind of Authoritarianism Index, showing the trend in state attitudes.
On the left is the Crime Survey for England and Wales.
On the right is the UK prison population.

Let's stop pretending that the billionaire media, endlessly attacking the BBC, has the slightest interest in balance, impartiality and accuracy. They won't be happy until the BBC is more rightwing than Vlad the Impaler. And then it still won't be enough.

Three of my great uncles, heroes all, died in World War Two to stop men like this. Will we now allow them to saunter into power?

I’ve just finished reading Sarah Hall’s new novel Helm. It is a truly astonishing thing, this book, so vivid that you keep wondering how she could have been witness to all those events, from the Neolithic onwards. Then you remember she made them up. But how? 🧵1/5
