Have done, but microwave works too. Make a cut in the pointy, fluffy bit at the top so it doesn't explode and ping it for 10 to 20 seconds. Avoid the steam and peel off the skin and the fluffy inner skin which is really bitter. But don't eat conkers (horse chestnuts), they're poisonous!

More thrillingly these are the edible variety of chestnut rather than conkers. I do love a conker though, I put them on a shelf or windowsill to ward off spiders. Don't think the spider thing actually works but a conker adds a certain something to the decor!

Thanks! Not sure, 30 or 40 years maybe. It wasn't planted as such, just turned up in the hedge. Thinking about it, the apples used to be plain green when the tree was younger.
