An organisation called Science Media Centre quickfires comments from experts in response to news events. A snapshot of what I got today:

And that ^^ is what a cameraman wearing a bee suit looks like...

Scientists at Oxford university have engineered a yeast that can produce a honeybee "superfood" that could protect bees against climate change and habitat loss

Our story here - and on BBC news bulletins last week filmed with thousands of bees in Oxford and Cardiff..

Countries are meeting now to try to thrash out a global deal to address the exploding plastics problem - my colleague @esmestallard.bsky.social has this fantastic explainer - and she is following the twists and turns of the negotiations www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Summit opens in final push for plastics treaty to tackle crisis
The world's nations are hoping to sign the first global plastic treaty to limit plastic pollution.

After a long and exhausting but stimulating week at the Rubin Community Workshop, I got to talk about some of the first science results coming from @vrubinobs.bsky.social on BBC Radio 4 Today (24 minutes in) www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

If you couldn't study science at school, or the teaching was bad, don't worry, you could still become a leading scientist and even an Astronomer Royal.
My colleague @pallabg.bsky.social story on Prof Michele Dougherty's new appointment and her brilliant career

www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
UK gets first female Astronomer Royal in 350 years
Prof Michele Dougherty is the first woman to be appointed to the influential post.

The ICJ has released its long-awaited climate opinion and lawyers say it goes far further than expected.
It could open the door to climate vulnerable states suing richer nations over historic emissions.
@esmestallard.bsky.social and I watched the 2-hour read-out www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Top UN court says countries can sue each other over climate change
The decision from the world's highest court has been welcomed by developing nations at most risk from climate change.

Great work highlighting these remarkable sea temperatures in the Mediterranean
erwanrivault.com
Parts of the Mediterranean Sea reached 30C this week, much earlier than usual, raising fears for marine life.

For some areas, this is 6 or 7C warmer than usual at this time of year.

Our story with more maps by @markpoynting.bsky.social and me here:
www.bbc.com/news/article...
Map of sea surface temperatures in the Mediterranean Sea showing parts of it reached 30C such as off the coast of Calabria, and the islands of Majorca and Sicily. Below the map is a chart showing daily maximum temperature at a buoy next to Majorca where it reached 30C for the first time this early in the season.

Thank you Catherine! A fascinating story 😍

A tiny, obscure animal often sold as aquarium food has been quietly protecting our planet from global warming by undertaking an epic migration. My write-up of new research here www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Tiny creature gorges, gets fat, and locks up planet-warming carbon
Scientists find out how the epic deep sea migration of a tiny animal is storing planet-warming carbon.

A dinosaur the height of a labrador has been named a new species by scientists at the Natural History Museum -

We went to see the little creature being assembled last week before it goes on display. You can go see the dog dino in the museum's Earth Hall from Thursday 🦕

Near-earth objects! Asteroids or comets that come close to Earth and could potentially hit.

Pretty exciting - Vera Rubin reveals in its press conference that the telescope detected 2,104 new asteroids and 7 space objects close to Earth.
For context, all other space and ground surveys combined usually find about 20,000 asteroids in a year.

Vera C Rubin observatory is an amazingly powerful new telescope in Chile that promises to transform our understanding of the universe.
I've been following this for months and finally the day is here - Watch the live reveal of its first celestial images here now www.youtube.com/watch?v=dF1g...

Wonderful story by my colleague @pallabg.bsky.social

I particularly like this line:

During the chaotic period the Sun tries to reduce its complexity and violence spills out, as bits of the Sun hurtle toward the Earth.

An intense marine heatwave has developed in the UK and Ireland - with anomalies of 5C found in at least one area.

The impacts probably aren't as severe as it would be in summer, but it's a worrying sign of what is likely to happen more often as climate change continues to warm our oceans.
Marine heatwave: UK sea temperatures soar after exceptionally warm Spring
Sea temperatures in some areas off the UK and Ireland are 4C above average.

England had the driest spring since 1961 - leaving rivers exceptionally low in much of the UK - some had record lows for April
The government and water companies are watching closely to see if this turns into a national drought but at the moment the signs aren't good www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Exceptionally low river levels forecast in parts of the UK

We have develpment of a woolly mouse as a step to creating a mammoth like creature by gentically modifying elephants. The firm involved, Colossal Biosciences say they can do it in five years, but the development and claim has bought considerable criticsm and concern.🧪
