I think it depends on the book whether knowledge of the world beforehand is a spoiler. Lord of the Rings? No... not a spoiler. The Left Hand of Darkness? ...eh, maybe a little bit of a spoiler. If the world is laid out immediately in the book, it's probably not a spoiler to describe the world.

As a former copy editor, one piece of advice I can offer to anyone proofing a document: read it backwards at least once. When a person reads sentences normally, the brain automatically fills in information for comprehension, so you can't trust a straight read. Read each word and sentence backwards.
