Peacebuilding does not promote wanton abuse. For our personal safety and sanity, we might sometimes need to close doors, or even build metaphorical walls. ❤️I’ve learned this the hard way.Sometimes, yes, restraint and questions and silence and giving everyone the benefit of the doubt—all of that great expert advice — are good and right and applicable.And sometimes, when there’s a history of abuse, repeated bullying, demeaning language about you or others, or boundary-bashing— that’s when you are wise to step away.Warn the other party that they are treading on your boundary.And now— NOW—they’ve crossed it.E.Nough.✋🏽And if those two syllables are somehow incomprehensible to your conversation partner, you remove yourself. 🌟May I get personal? 🌟Late one a December night, in one especially tense and boundary-assaulting moment with a member of my extended circle, a person who had historically caused damage to my family members as well as to me, I packed my bag in record time and walked out into the ice cold street. I kept walking.And waking. And found another place to regain my sense of balance and integrity.And I have since — lovingly and with sincere concern for their welfare and joy — removed that person from my life.It took decades of forgiving and second chances and drawing them close again only to get the same hateful treatment in return. I had to accept what was not gonna change. Whew. That was a big step for a person like myself who is, as a friend once described me, “the incarnation of Switzerland.”He meant conflict averse, I think. Not quadralingual. 😂🌟We need not subject ourselves to abuse, cruelty or betrayal in the name of “being charitable.”Love all your soul can! Yes!And if needed, at great distance. ❤️🙏🌟Amen?
