According to Production Manager Aerienne Russell, CicLAvia events have been held since 2010 and aim to give people a space to go outdoors.

“The mission of that is to give folks a place to recreate outdoors, whether that’s biking, walking, et cetera,” Russel said.

According to a 2016 RAND Corporation and UCLA study, CicLAvia events’ impact goes beyond the environment. Business adjacent to CicLAvia events see about a 57% increase in sales and crime decreased by 40% on CicLAvia days, according to the study.

CicLAvia events also have a considerable impact on air quality. According to 2015 study by UCLA, these events reduce ultra-fine particles on CicLAvia streets by 21% and 12% on streets still open to traffic.

According to the LA Times, an analysis by BikeLA of the 26 bicycle fatalities that occurred in 2022, found that speeds over 35mph, lack of infrastructure for cyclists, poor street lighting and multiple travel lanes were the principle four contributing factors.
