- and then getting tossed out into space, where it will, again, cool at a linear rate until losing all of its energy and then vanishing more or less safely in the empty void of space, violating numerous physical laws in the process.

-This makes it a hazard to keep aboard, but is also an implausibly good opportunity to remove waste heat from the ship, so rather than ejecting the byproduct immediately, it is used as the second stage of a Salvation hull's coolant loop, absorbing heat from other systems-

- And the matter itself doesn't entirely follow known physics. Once in our universe, it will cool at a linear rate, no matter how hot it is, and once it reaches zero kelvin, it will vanish, presumably returning to wherever it came from, and take all adjacent matter with it when it does so.-

- Does not occur in our universe. Actually, they arent sure -where- it occurs, only that they are fairly certain one IS occurring... somewhere.

In doing so however, the devices produce large quanities of poorly understood byproduct, matter ripped from wherever these engines apply their force-

Salvation is meant to be -weird- It is a whole pile of clarketech that's been wrestled into practical application by relatively conventional engineers. This ship's actual thrusters are scattered inside the hull, and they can afford to be, as the reaction they produce to induce thrust-

As we often do.

Is that even a bad thing though?

The lancer actually changed the least out of all of them

-was overall stronger and lighter than salvaged examples, despite the defects, and its irregular growth merely a consequence of that. Not much effort could be spared in trying to remove the defects and it was good enough so thats what went into production.

-take the stone like armor plating for instance, Examples recovered from the Emergency were smooth and consistent, at first the rocky exterior of Arkaran attempts at replicating it were thought to be flaws, but repeated refinements showed that their imperfect formula for growing the material-

-not clear on the operating principles, found the technology easy enough to replicate.

They even managed to improve on them in many areas, the examples they were studying were designed to be as cheap as possible, by a system that did not much prize development, so there was plenty of overhead-
