For one, when you sign up you get asked to select topics of interest and it automatically subscribes you to a variety of communities across the fediverse related to those topics to help you get started.

you can no longer see information about "failed" login attempts. It used to be funny to go look at all the folks in Russia or Romania trying to log in via my 30 year old Hotmail address that is still set as an alias.

They also changed the default swap partition size. I'm not sure what math they're using, but previously the installer only made a 1 GB swap partition, for me at least. If I wanted more I would manually create a swap file. Now however it created a swap partition equal to the RAM in my laptop.

13 upped that to 1 GB. Between that and some changes in Gnome I didn't see because of old settings carrying over, a clean install was definitely a good idea.
