That’s why sortition matters — bringing together citizens, selected by lottery, to deliberate on major issues. Not a technocratic fix, but a redistribution of narrative power, where legitimacy grows from collective authorship rather than being spoken for.

As @policypress.bsky.social #UncomfortablyOff shows, the top 10% don’t just earn more — they shape what counts as “normal”, “fair”, or “squeezed”. Fear of downward mobility drives a cautious, defensive politics that manages decline rather than imagines change.

They still rely on the moral story of meritocracy: work hard, be sensible, and stability follows. But that story has broken. Employment no longer guarantees security, public services have eroded, and inequality now flows far more from wealth than wages.

That gap shows up in how political research is read. A recent Guardian article about the views of a focus group of relatively well-off voters described feeling squeezed — and their voices still shape the national story because they mirror the people already overrepresented in politics and media.
