Should be writing. Geyser researcher/appreciator/zealot and caver.
Long exposure from the camera during peak—this is not what auroras look like to the unaided eye. But I could easily walk around the terraces without a headlamp. Not much motion for this display, but very intense red colors and generally bright glow.

FUCK OFF, CLOUDS

Find the pine marten!

Uncertainty ahead, but the sunrise and the day’s work were good. And I unexpectedly got to talk to 6th graders and undergrads on field trips today. Difficult to tell which group was more excited!

For work, I take trash out of geyser basins in Yellowstone National Park and am working on improvements to the park’s geyser monitoring project.

For fun, I’m learning cave survey and practicing my cave photography.

It's 2025 and I'm tired, but not *so* tired that I can't encourage you to vote for calcite by posting my cave photos. Here's a view from a cave system that straddles the Montana/Wyoming border.

If you want to see photos from the deepest point in Carlsbad Caverns, calcite has to advance... #MinCup25

Yeah I do really like having a 2nd monitor, why do you ask

Excellent soundscape, 11/10, no notes.

Current status as both a geyser and a space weather nerd. 😂

oh gosh it’s happening

Honestly this is weird without @cbdawson.bsky.social!

My favorite bit is the end, where the eruption slows down and switches to punctuated bursting. Turn your volume up to hear the chugging of one of the cones in front of the pool as it enters a steam phase once Daisy quits erupting.

0946 MDT. Daisy has a shallow pool which jets for the first ~2.5 minutes of the eruption. It erupts at an angle (hard to see from this vantage point) to a max height of 60 or 70 ft. Here it is kicking off the eruption after a few big splashes from the pool.
May 17, 2025 at 3:56 PM
Cones splashing continuously and vigorously now. We’re close.
May 17, 2025 at 3:42 PM
Daisy is extremely regular right now, with most eruptions falling at ~1h50m apart. We are quickly approaching the expected time for the next eruption.

The cones you see in the front of the pool in this video start splashing as the eruption approaches. The splashing will get more intense soon.

It’s my day off from working in the geyser basins, so, naturally I’m at Upper Geyser Basin today to stare at holes until they boil.

Wait along with me for Daisy Geyser (feature on right).

Not pulling any punches, here.

It's just a bigger, hotter Steamboat!
March 26, 2025 at 8:55 PM
May we all find a brief moment to be this relaxed today.
March 16, 2025 at 11:09 PM
Mischief is happening.
March 12, 2025 at 11:19 PM
Well... yes, but also no. Lone Star's major eruptions are pretty regular every 3–4 hr, sometimes with minors in between. I kinda see it, but a better pairing would be Aurum, which constantly boils and has a very hard time actually erupting. 😂

h/t @mabdepot.bsky.social for finding this FB gem

we are all eepy

Quote post with a picture you took in a National Park.

Left: here I am, having just emerged from Carlsbad Cavern's deepest point after a permitted volunteer work trip, enjoying the cool breeze and a stunning sunset.

Right: said deepest point. Still beautiful because it is protected.
