I’m not religious. But once upon a time, in my youth, I fell in love with the idea of a Jesus who was a rebel, who defended love and kindness and human rights and justice. Here’s hoping that this rebelliousness awakens in more people. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/13/o...
Screenshot of NYT oped: “But Jesus never sought to replace Caesar with a Christian Caesar. He came to dismantle the very logic of Caesar: the belief that might makes right, peace comes through violence and politics is best wielded through fear, coercion and control. Instead, he inaugurated a counter-kingdom that aspires to loving kindness, radical welcome, mercy and justice — a kingdom where the vulnerable and the poor are lifted up, and the idols of empire are exposed as frauds.” Screenshot of NYT oped: “Waving palms on Palm Sunday connects us to justice, public life, discourse and action. We cannot remain silent on behalf of those who genuinely cry out “Hosanna … Save us.” At some point, we have to make a choice about the Jesus we claim to follow. Either he didn’t care about the poor, the marginalized and the oppressed — in which case we’ve built our religion on a hollow figure. Or he did care, deeply, and we’ve chosen to ignore that part because it challenges our comfort, our politics and our priorities.”

These cut NIH funding programs are the main source of training for 1000s of students at MSIs, PUIs & underresourced institutions across the US. So many scientists at top institutions came through these programs. The demographics of who does science will be set back to the 1980s.

Thank you for sharing. I needed his words today and a reminder of what’s at stake.

Civil rights hero John Lewis was born on this day in 1940. His life’s mission? Making good trouble to fight racism, protect voting rights, and prevent gun violence.

Let’s honor his legacy with action—because the truth is still marching on.

Update: The UPR has gone back to its
original IDC rate bsky.app/profile/ggue...
gguerre.bsky.social
Update: It seems @uprrp is now adhering to the court-mandated pause and is the back to its original indirect rate of 49%. However, this signals a few things 1) we need to make sure institutions are not overzealous in implementing EOs when they don’t have to 1/n

Colleagues in #PuertoRico just told me that the pause in funding cuts to grants from NIH does not include US territories! Support for administrative costs (real expenses)
@uprrp.bsky.social is going from 49% to 15%, a huge blow to a system already suffering staggering cuts by @fombpr.bsky.social
gguerre.bsky.social
2) The UPR is in a very precarious position given the huge budget cuts previously mandated by the @FOMBPR and the current administration’s agenda to cut funding across the board for research, education and programs that support minority communities.

Surprise surprise, science education grants in minority communities like #PuertoRico + #USVirginIslands are on the chopping block bc, guess what, populations they serve are predominantly minority. Oh, add to that projects exploring how to improve natural disaster relief & resiliency #HurricaneMaria

Is your NSF grant on this list? Reach out if so!

Ted Cruz released a list of grants flagged for DEI or "neo-Marxist class warfare propaganda" from his Oct. report.

NSF is using keywords from that report for their review, though Cruz's list is likely larger.

Research universities are the main social mobility & economic drivers in #PuertoRico & a big part of our health system. Like in other jurisdictions, drastic cuts to IDC would have vast effects. Territories also need to be protected from this flawed policy. @aoc.bsky.social @velazquez.house.gov

I just spoke to a colleague at the UPR Río Piedras and it seems the injunction does not apply to Puerto Rico. At least the UPR has begun modifying indirect cost rates from 49% to 15% which would mean a huge blow to a system that was already being gutted by the fiscal control board.

I see the same thing for the IMSD, MARC, G-RISE and Bridges to Doctorate programs, but unfortunately the link to NIH's interest in diversity is still inactive (see ex grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...)

Relieved that the MOSAIC K99/R00 grants.gov page is no longer expired (updated today), and it sounds like people are able to submit apps again 🧪

Many NIH FOAs have been taken down and their deadlines cancelled, some as people were preparing to hit submit. Diversity F31 applications have been pulled from the review pile at the last minute. Will these programs come back? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Will they be at all recognizable if they do?
