"You really like platypuses, huh?" "Yeah! I love them more than the moon, the sun, and the cat." Her eyes narrow, searching Hana's face to see if she misunderstood her somehow. "The cat?" "The cat," Hana nods as if it's the most obvious thing in the world. "What cat?" "The cat." Mira blinks in confusion. She runs through what Hana said in her mind again, the moon, the sun, and the… A couple other words filter through her brain — stars, comets, planets; words that certainly make more sense in the given context, and she can't quite put a finger on how cat figures in. She looks to the couch and wonders if maybe… "That cat?" She asks, pointing at the furry animal curled up on the pile of blankets. "No, that's Canela," comes the reply, steady and cool in a way only eight year olds can pull off when correcting adults. "Right. So then, what cat?" "The cat," Hana states again before bringing her hands to her hips and looking Mira with a stare she's sure would make most people fold. "Eomma, Mira's uncultured ways are going to fuck up her love confession to mami." Tea sprays out of Rumi's mouth, who had been watching the exchange from the kitchen with amusement. "I had just taken a sip," she chokes out, the words caught between a cough and a laugh. Mira on the other hand feels like her brain has crashed and needs a reboot. Three months, they'd been dating for three months, and she had only been introduced to Hana last week as one of Zoey and Rumi's friends. She doesn't know whether to laugh or cry or simply walk out the door and into the closest bar. "Hana, where did you learn that word?" Rumi asks, still half choking and trying to suppress her laugher as she wipes down the outside of the refrigerator where most of the tea had ended up. Hana giggles, giving both women a quick shrug. "Mami says it all the time!"

The sudden stillness makes Mira's head snap up to Zoey's face. Her eyes are closed, head slightly tilted upwards, like she's trying to stop an onslaught of emotions from cascading out. Mira feels the tendrils of panic take root as her eyes roam down Zoey's body for any other signs — hands curled into fists resting against her thighs, back straight and stiff, small body shaking. Mira knows that tremble, knows what it means, knows it isn't pleasure but pain. Panic blooms in full force. "Zoey?" A small whimper cracks through Zoey's chest, head still head high as her breathing grows heavier, more frantic. "Babe, what's-" Something snaps, Zoey hunching forward forcefully, hands clutching Mira's shoulder with force. "I'm-" a sob wracks Zoey's body before she can get another word out.

Rumi knew, she'd seen it happen. She also knew how Zoey was — stubborn beyond belief but also scared. Scared to let people down, scared to be a burden, scared to be seen as less than because of her disability. Rumi thinks back to the social worker and therapist Zoey had to see after her surgery. They had asked Rumi to come in and to see if they would need relationship counselling. "A high percentage of relationships deteriorate when one partner is injured or disabled — whether temporarily or permanently." They didn't need to say the quiet part out loud for Rumi put the pieces together. She couldn't understand it then, and certainly couldn't understand it now. Yes, sometimes it was hard but this was Zoey. Her Zoey. She wouldn't ever leave her, especially not for this, not unless Zoey didn't want her in her life anymore.

mira is a lovergirl in every universe
Mira could have spent her whole life not knowing what it was like to love and be loved in return. She grew up in a house where affection was rationed, given out only when it was beneficial to her parents, and anything further was unthinkable, they'd made sure of that. The word 'love' had only ever been heard between those walls when they'd fallen from her own lips, when she'd begged and cried for even a small, pitiful ounce of it over the years before she couldn't anymore. There were so many nights she cried herself to sleep growing up, telling herself under the comfort of her blankets that she'd find love one day, platonic or romantic — it didn't matter to her then. She just wanted to know what it would be like to feel wanted, to be where the sun would rise and set for another person. She deserved it, no matter how many times her parents told her she didn't. A bitter laugh falls from her lips at the thought as she looks around Zoey's room, black ink still smeared across the walls like a revolting mural that exists solely to remind her of how she failed. Maybe she does; pain and guilt and heartbreak is the one thing in this world she believes she's entitled to. For being selfish. For spending years asking for something that wasn't meant to be hers. For wanting and coveting something that was meant to be earned and given freely, not yearned for. She's not sure why she ever even wanted it so fucking badly in the first place if it would inevitably lead to this. Her parents had always told her she was greedy, after all. Perhaps they were right; this is nothing short of what she deserves. She fidgets with the ring on her right hand — the one she had engraved with Zoey's heartbeat — before she moves to run her fingers over the scratch marks beneath her knee, cataloguing every dip. This is the last change Zoey made in this world — a desperate attempt to keep herself alive immortalized on wooden planks. The realization makes bile rise in her throat but she can't stop… Rumi and Zoey don't leave that day, or any day after that. They sit outside her door and wait for her, for the anger to die down, for the words she meant to say instead of lashing out, for her to feel safe. She learns to ask for forgiveness and mean it, she learns to share what she's feeling without directing it at them, she learns how to ask for what she wants and what it's like to receive comfort and love without needing to. She also learns how to be there for them in the same way. For Rumi, who always puts on a mask before asking for help, who takes on more than her shoulders can carry. She always kept them at arm's length — close, but not too close — using her relentless drive to plunge herself, and them, deeper into work. Pushing up deadlines and making last minute changes that disrupt their schedules more often than not, while somehow following up with everything in order to make sure the end result is perfect. Only perfect will seal the Honmoon. Mira adapts, stays up with her to make sure she's taking breaks and not staying up too late on nights before an appearance, brings tea and food when Rumi forgets to eat, learns how to read Rumi's tells before she's about to spiral — the calm before a storm, a language she's well versed in now. And Zoey, who appeared to be on the verge of words when they first met, wanting so desperately to belong but held back by a symphony of what ifs, who buried herself so deeply into her notebooks there were days she didn't leave her room. Until one day those thoughts spilled out of lined pages that couldn't hold them in anymore and into the air between them, fast paced and indefinite, warm and bright, accompanied by a touch here and a hug there. It's still cautious, fragile at times, like she's scared that if the smile that's permanently affixed to her face falls everything will break around them. It takes a little more effort for Mira to be what Zoey needs. It's not a chore or an imposition, but it requires for some of her e… Mira’s touch is a life preserver in a storm. She works her fingers through Zoey’s hair and it feels like stolen breaths of air as she clings to any safety she can. It’s messy, ugly, inconsistent… but it works. Mira holds her up and helps wash away the sorrow, the pain, and the anxiety starts to recede — still turbulent but not enough to capsize her anymore. They spend long minutes in there, Mira diligently washing her hair, her body, leaving kisses and words of assurance all along her skin, and when they’re done — when no part of Zoey has been left unloved — Mira reaches out to turn off the shower, discarding her own sopping clothes before stepping out to grab a towel and wrapping it around Zoey's frame. She helps Zoey out, pulling her gently towards the counter and motioning at her neck like she always does. It's a routine, something intimately theirs — Zoey wrapping her arms around her so she can help lift her onto the counter after they shower. She gives Zoey's forehead a kiss before moving for another towel that she uses to dry Zoey's hair, slow and careful, in practiced motions like she's done this a hundred times — because she has. Where they would normally talk or joke around, Mira spends her time whispering soft nothings — or in this case soft everythings — at Zoey. How beautiful she is, how strong she is, how much she loves her and how much Rumi loves her too, and how fucking proud she is. Because she is so proud of who Zoey is, of her skills and talents, of everything she stands for, and for surviving this — for fighting and surviving against the thoughts in her head she knows are begging her to give up. She helps Zoey into her clean clothes, kissing her temple once she's done, picking her up to take her back to the bedroom where she sets her down on the bed once again before quickly changing into a loose shirt and shorts herself. On the way back she grabs Zoey's phone and a pair of headphones and settles into bed next to Zoey, facing her and pla…

Zoey startles at the comment — sudden and seemingly out of nowhere — and tilts her head to look at the girl next to her. Rumi's eyes are fixed on the scenery above them, reds and pinks and purples dancing around each other to make the sky look like a painting, while her fingers — intertwined with her own —tap a rhythm on the back of her hand. "The sun goes away," Rumi continues softly. "Not literally, obviously, but to us it does. The sky stays." Rumi's fingers tighten between her own, twice in quick succession. A confession that's theirs. An affirmation of what they mean to each other. "It's colourful and beautiful. And it holds the stars," Rumi turns her whole body then, fingers moving to trace the freckles on Zoey's face. "Just like you do."

"You doing okay?" Her eyes snap open. Rumi is leaning in the doorway, the lights from the Christmas tree in the living room shining behind her make her look like an angel, ethereal. Calm. Serene. Everything she wishes she could be right now, but her pounding heart and racing mind say otherwise. It suits Rumi. She is one, after all, in Zoey's eyes. She couldn't have gotten through the last 17 months without her, wouldn't be sitting here holding the most precious part of her if it hadn't been for Rumi. "Just tired," she manages with a small smile. It's forced, and she hates that that's the best she can give right now. Too many people, too much going on — it's overwhelming even if they're there to celebrate with her. "Exhausted, really. But good exhausted, happy exhausted." Rumi pushes herself away from the doorframe and makes her way to the bed, placing herself in front of Zoey — one leg crossed on the bed while the other swings off the edge, hand finding Zoey's in the bassinet. It's a routine by now, the small circles Rumi's thumb traces on Zoey's wrist — checking her pulse and soothing her nerves all at once. "I didn't think I would still be here," Zoey admits quietly, voice breaking on the last word. "After Christmas last year…" "But you are. You're here, we're here." Rumi's voice is soft and strong but Zoey can see the flash of panic that is there and gone at the reminder. It had been close. Too close. "I wasn't sure I'd still want to be here. Or even have the strength to do this again." She looks over to where her and Rumi's hands are, tiny fingers wrapped around her pointer finger. "But she changed everything."
