When I first started reading H. P. Lovecraft in the 1980s there were just a few photos of him in circulation. Now there are so many. This is my favourite, taken in 1934, the year he wrote The Shadow Out of Time.

Taken while he was in Washington in 1842, the 'McKee' daguerreotype is the earliest known photograph of Edgar Allan Poe. The name of the photographer is not known.

No one read in my house except for me when I was a kid. I spent my days in the library. The only books in the house were mine. To my knowledge, my parents never read a single book during my lifetime. I made sure to instil a love of reading in my son from an early age.
