Scientist working on understanding climate impacts on society and on the role of infrastructure for sustainable development and adaptation. Based at CMCC (IT) and IIASA (AT). As always, into cooking and guitar jams. Venice (the old one)-based.
🌳 New study: we analyze 190 cities (2016–2023) using satellite data & machine learning to estimate the Green View Index (GVI)
– Global street greenery down 0.3–0.5%/yr
– Inequalities within cities are stark
– Open-source model for real-time tracking

I guess most of us are familiar with this type of situation, expecially those of us living in a city in a climate with hot summers, not to mention Mediterranean, Tropical, and Equatorial climates. Greener areas are cooler 😎 🌳🌴#urbanheat

Ok, let's carry on with the fruitful debate on individual responsibility (not to mention the #guilt) for mitigating climate change. #taxaviation #subsidiserail. NB: yes, the rail trip (same date) is only one leg!

☀️🏘️Understanding the needs of the most disadvantaged is imperative to develop fair and adequate strategies to adapt to extreme heat and keep cool and healthy. *Systemic cooling poverty"* shows why air conditioning is only a part of a broader story.

👵🌡️🌎How are population aging and rising temperatures interacting? In the US, rising temperatures are increasing exposure in historically colder regions, while aging is driving exposure in historically warm southern regions. @CmccClimate @BU_Tweets

Situation:
- you have continuous obs. in space (e.g. altitude DEM, solar radiation...);
- you want to calculate the Δ between two obs. periods;
- of course, you are unsure how to distinguish real change and measurement errors (of course spatially autocorrelated).

In my humble opinion, the coolest and most innovative figure from the IPCC 6th AR WGIII. Basically, it tells you what you can do on a daily based to contribute to #climatechangemitigation (besides going to Fridays for the Future). Congratulations to @efesce and all contributors!

Scientific evaluation metrics are unreliable to say the least. Yet, they still matter a lot for habilitation/scoring/funding attribution. Here's a personal tale. Three years ago I received a private message on ResearchGate from a Chinese PhD student. (1/n)

Since decades, economists, engineers, environmental scientists, etc. use satellite data of nighttime lights (NTL). Roman et al. @NASA recently published the innovative Black Marble product. But how can we access these data from R? Introducing blackmaRble! #nightlights #viirs

My stats-god friend @Ahmed_T_Hammad lives in rural Indonesia. During 2020 he (+ @nytimes ) told me about LOADS going back to agriculture for a financial lifeline. I guess we went a bit too far analysing this...
