Here not there.
Thanks for setting me straight. I did some reading and you are right. I’ve been swayed by Adobe’s (and Ai in general) hype. Sophisticated algorithms is the best description for the baked in functionality.

I owe you an apology. I’ve done a bit of research (after being challenged in another thread) and I have been swayed by the marketing hype. What I thought was Ai is actually sophisticated algorithms. It’s not as baked in as I had believed. Phew, I can confidently say “no Ai”.
November 17, 2025 at 5:44 PM
Yeah, for the individual plan. It was complicated, I am on a Family Plan and the link they sent was wrong. When I did change it canceled my plan. It wasn’t a fun day with Microsoft.
Anyway. I no longer have copilot stalking my cursor.

Fair point, though I’m not sure sophisticated algorithms quite covers it either. And it’s referred to as Ai by Adobe and users.

The point I have been trying to make is that lumping Ai into a monolithic evil is a bit knee jerk and will have unintended consequences for book designers and publishers. We can’t put that genie back in the bottle so the guidelines should be specific to wholesale use of generative Ai.
November 17, 2025 at 8:37 AM
Yeah. There’s a big difference between generative and agentic Ai. And there’s crossover where there’s generative components in agentic that aren’t plagiaristic.
November 17, 2025 at 8:27 AM
I agree. I spent 8 hours on a chat to MS trying to get a version of Office without copilot. But there’s no distinction between the plagiarism machine and the automation machine. Both are Ai. I know I’m kind of splitting hairs but if I am asked to guarantee no Ai, I can’t.
November 17, 2025 at 7:34 AM
Obviously I can’t be definitive as I don’t know what apps you’re using but I would be surprised if you aren’t. Ai is like microplastics, it’s in everything. I get that you’re not using generative Ai but you are probably using agentic Ai. The Ockham guidelines don’t make the distinction.

Does the No Ai rule apply to this sort of work? If designers have to make no Ai guarantees, can we given who baked in the technology is?
November 17, 2025 at 3:07 AM
So maybe I'm not explaining what i mean very well. I don't use Ai to ideate or generate imagery wholesale. I use it to upscale imagery, or extend a small area an edge on an image, or remove something distracting, etc. This is built in to Photoshop and other apps.
November 17, 2025 at 3:07 AM
I absolutely agree. But there's also terrible covers done without Ai. If you're just prompting mid-journey and using whatever it spits out then you're not really designing. But you can use Ai as part of your practice and still be creating great, orginal work.

The Ockham guidelines say "... Use of AI for research, minor editorial, or formatting support may be permitted." 90% of books on the long list will have had some Ai 'help' in production.
November 17, 2025 at 2:05 AM
Ai slop is terrible and a blight on our culture but Ai is also an incredible tool for helping realise a design... when used well. I'm old enough to remember the push back against "desktop publishing" and how it would be the death of design. It wasn't.
November 17, 2025 at 2:05 AM
I'm a book designer, we don't really get contracts as such, we get briefs. I imagine there'll now be a mandatory stating "no Ai". Which is a knee jerk reaction and will be a pain because we all use Ai everyday, it's baked into the apps we use.

Yeah nah. We already had that mature conversation in 2013 and 67.3% of us said nah. Not that they listened.
November 10, 2025 at 8:19 AM
I'm guessing that's the case. I am now down to 697, so they're clearing it at a rate of 80 people an hour

I’m on a Family plan. It’s only offering a Personal Classic plan and there’s no reference anywhere (that i can find) to Family Classic. After an hour i am now down to 828 in the queue.
November 5, 2025 at 11:36 PM
I received the email this morning with instructions on how to ‘downgrade’ to Classic. The link provided goes to a different product and I am 891 in the queue to chat to someone. Classic Microsoft.

Maybe – and not that I am making excuses for a stupid waste of TP money – they meant 38min drive time? If you ‘shave’ 11km off the distance by having a straighter more direct route, at 110kmh it’s 38 minutes.
