To sum it up, my favorite show has aged like wine, and the real world has aged like milk. We’re living in the Maniac universe of rampant inequality, total corporate dominance, and omnipresent scam culture. “All souls are on a quest to connect…” and oligarchs are building the barriers that stop them.

My fellow Maniac fans may also be horrified to see that some of the quirky/shady businesses from the show have become increasingly real: Getting directly compensated for viewing ads, summoning a simulated friend to talk to, paying to have your data scrubbed, or paying to unscrub someone else’s data.
