To my knowledge, theoretical physicists in general are extremely skeptical about the possible relevance that quantum effects can play on consciousness, with only a very small subset taking the idea seriously. I had no idea this line of thought was actually influential...

I don't think it's fair to say that physicists invoke QM when talking about consciousness (at least def not my experience). But if you're referring to some people in particular then, yeah, the world is full of individuals who make bold claims about any kind of stuff they know nothing about.
