Yep. Rather than humans as the most powerful or evolved etc. species, we are one of the youngest. We are barely newborns next to all the life that has figured out how to flourish amongst the ecosystems of Earth.

Oh I absolutely loved everything in these books! Big appreciation right here. I wanted to be a part of that world probably more than any other fantasy as a kid. Just magic ✨🦕

I wonder if there's something about how living things come into being that determines the intelligence or capabilities available to them - does being born matter? Thinking about implications for emerging tech relating to synthetic biologies.
