I love gummy bears, ride dirtbikes, and can talk for hours about trees. My journey from journalism to biologist has equipped me to collaborate with associations on a mission to change the world.
Current Obsessions: Castor canadensis aka the Beaver
ME: "I would like to be challenged in my job."

"NOT LIKE THAT!"

Walking to work, I notice a new car with a sheet hiding the backseat so someone can sleep, an all-too-familiar sight in our city of homelessness. Reflecting, I recall a powerful story highlighting our duty to aid the vulnerable. How do we build a more compassionate community? Where do we start?

Craig Coyner’s descent onto the streets of Bend, Ore., came after decades spent fighting as a lawyer and politician for those on the edge of society.

First Lady Jill Biden visited Cedars-Sinai to discuss vital women's health initiatives and to advocate for research and innovation. She met with two US HUPO members I have the honor of working with. What an amazing moment for proteomics and women's health!

Blustery and wet Monday here in Portland Proper. With the immense rainfall on the horizon, I'm wondering if it's time to build myself an arl.

It's not Friday unless I spend at least 45 minutes explaining my newest deep dive into some sort of data and then explaining all my findings and new knowledge to someone who's not even listening.

Do you ever get so deeply obsessed with the data you’re analyzing that even when you’re done you’re thinking of more questions to ask it???

I forgot how intoxicating being in a university lab can be; the excitement over small discoveries, the curiosity that never ends and the desire to answer all of the questions. We had an incredible site visit to the Ohio State University and I’m excited to be back in June!

It's been a busy fall - between lots of work momentum, prepping for next year, and putting in a ton of volunteer hours, I managed to finish my last two OMRA races with podium finishes!

This wrapped up the OMRA Women's Expert Championship for me with first place!

So many people say they don't have much hope for the future. I, on the other hand, get to work with so many budding students and future scientists that every day I feel hope. There are some great things happening behind the scenes of almost every organization I work with.

Scientists are a bunch of nerds:

Ed Southern invented a method for probing for DNA separated by gel electrophoresis: a 'Southern blot'.

So when a method was developed for probing *RNA*, they called it a "northern blot".

Similar jokers named a protein blot a "western blot".

My obsession with snails started when I was 4 and had a pet banded wood snail I named "Curls". Jeremy, the Lefty Snail, looking for love became quite the media phenomenon a few years back. You can read more here: cnn.it/45bElJF Or if you're looking for a more fun listen: bit.ly/3PueOpe

After going on a rant about how beavers built America, my friend looked at me and asked "Is this like you and the snails?" This reminded me of how for about a year I had to explain genetically rare "lefty" snails. I even had our son and friends searching for them every time they were outside. 😅

Intro time! Hi, I’m Lydia. After getting my Master’s, I spent a decade plus as a research coordinator for grad students. After C19 I transitioned into scientific association management. I race dirtbikes, live in the PacNW, am increasingly curious and am an ally for science education and literacy.

There are days I miss working in higher ed, where curiosity and debate are held to a high standard. I miss learning things daily and teaching young people about more than just subject matter. Maybe it's just the fall, but I long for libraries and homework, learning labs and deadlines.

I learned today (from a mutual on the other site) that Carson had a mutually admiring exchange of correspondence with the ecologist Charles Elton about Silent Spring and Ecology of Invasions.

Quick Facts: The Roosevelt Elk is the largest of the 4 remaining North American subspecies. Bulls weigh 875-1300lbs and cows weigh around 700. They are pivotal to the life cycle of PacNW forests. There once were 10 million in N.A. but we estimate there are less than 100k today.

Our herd of Rosies usually arrives in August, but last year they stayed until May. Woke up this morning, opened the curtains and they were back! I screamed excitedly and scared my fiancé. One confirmed large bull, at least 2.5 years old, with 16 cows and 2 calves. Day MADE!

Just wrangled a webinar on unconventional careers in a super niche scientific realm today. My burning questions: Why do post-grads always get the 'academia or industry' spiel? Don't we all know someone who walked a different path? And how do we highlight those options to bring more into the fold?

Spent 15+ years on that other thought-vomit, feed-based app. As I migrate to new channels, this is a warning that I will likely post far too much about my newest captivations: beavers and Roosevelt elk.

There also may be tidbits from my kid, dirtbikes and general musings in the forms of rants.
