as inventive as you can get with Source, to this day HL2 combat doesn't hit the same peaks as HL1 combat for me even w/ vastly more options and level design variety. When the maps are good for it, HL1 fights just flow in a way that they rarely do in HL2 (2 has its own strengths of course!)

obvs there's other crpgs I'm just trying to think of like, the big banner ones of the last couple years that are (were?) easier to recommend

you can definitely feel them trying to be like "this ain't your grandpas D&D videogame" now that they were away from the actual D&D license and playing it today those parts are, at best, really cringey lol
