I think this is great advice. In my case coming from an Italian public universities I went from low international ranking to the very top and it made a lot of difference for my career. I agree that those universities are pressurised environments with strange dynamics at times.

I understand what you mean. I was also stressed during my PhD at oxford. But I did my undergrad in a public university with no ranking and for sure Oxford changed completely my professional trajectory. It does make a difference.

12) There are tons of great researches and academics what is difficult to find is an academic who is not boring.

13) Social networks are great instruments of knowledge dissemination but most of academic managers have not realised it yet.

9) Good research takes time. Asking people to publish so much is often counterproductive.

10) Micromanaging academics is counterproductive. Providing freedom.

11) Requiring young academics and PhD candidates to ask for permission to go to international conferences kills their career.

6) If you are offered the opportunity to do a PhD or a master at Oxbridge, Harvard or Yale don’t thing twice. Go!

7) Smart work exists in academia as well. Just look for it.

3) If your boss is inventing excuses not to promote you beware of their PhD candidate(s).

4) If your cv says that you are really good there is a fair chance that you are really good.

5) Avoid places that are completely isolated from the real world.
