Using fieldwork on museum exhibitions in Almaty, I show how Kazakhstan frames the Silk Road through transnationalism, hospitality, and Islamic modernity - often diverging from China’s vision. This study highlights how narratives are not just tools of statecraft but sites of negotiation.
