🧠🎉 New paper in #AdvancedScience! 👏
Giuseppe Stolfa, from #UNIBA, used a novel #graph-based approach to define meta-ROIs on resting-state #fMRI data from 1,200+ subjects. Prefrontal-striatal #connectivity is associated to executive function and altered in #psychosis, even without cognitive deficits
Altered Brain‐Behavior Association During Resting State is a Potential Psychosis Risk Marker
The study detects a potential multimodal biomarker that can be promising for identifying early markers of psychosis. It shows a consistent brain-behavior association between a circuit of interconnect...

Congrats to Roberta Passiatore @lieberinstitute.bsky.social for another editorial success and to Antonella Lupo (Univ.Bari) for her first publication✍️ in #TheJournalofNeuroscience!
Their work on the #thalamus reveals new insights into thalamocortical connectivity, #memory, and neural individuality🧠🔬
Interindividual Variability In Memory Performance Is Related To Cortico-Thalamic Networks During Memory Encoding And Retrieval
Encoding new memories relies on functional connections between the medial temporal lobe and the frontoparietal cortices. Multi-scan fMRI showed changes in these functional connections before and after...

March 20th, I competed in the Sumo Science Championship – MCS edition, where experts face off in scientific challenges. My match? Astrophysics (Elisabetta Bissaldi, Politecnico of Bari) vs. Neuroscience (me, University of Bari).
With 33 middle schoolers as our audience, Neuroscience won 23-10! 🎉 🧠🏆

🧩New study: "Network Constraints on 𝘪𝘯 𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘰 Synaptic Alterations in Schizophrenia"

medrxiv.org/content/10.1...

We map a prominent brain-wide pattern of synaptic defects in people with Schizophrenia using PET, then model the molecular, cellular & connectomic features shaping this pattern 🧵1/3👇

Our latest cross-species 🐭👨 work is out today
▶️ science.org/doi/10.1126/...

We show that
1️⃣ Brain connectivity in carriers of genetic alterations conferring high risk for #autism & #schizophrenia U-turns (hyper▶️ hypo) during adolescence
2️⃣ This switch is driven by synaptic remodeling

Thread 🧵👇 1/n
Synaptic-dependent developmental dysconnectivity in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome
Synaptic dysfunction underlies brain connectivity alterations in 22q11DS, a syndrome linked to neuropsychiatric disorders.

“There is no schizophrenia. There are schizophrenias."

Researchers are discovering that schizophrenia, which can involve alterations in both the brain and the body—particularly in the immune system—doesn't look the same in everyone with the condition.

My latest feature for @sciam.bsky.social:
Schizophrenia Is More Complex Than We Thought, Which Means New Avenues for Treatment
As a complex picture of schizophrenia emerges, so do new ways to treat the disorder

Why do we not remember being a baby? One idea is that the hippocampus, which is essential for episodic memory in adults, is too immature to form individual memories in infancy. We tested this using awake infant fMRI, new in @science.org #ScienceResearch www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Hippocampal encoding of memories in human infants
Humans lack memories for specific events from the first few years of life. We investigated the mechanistic basis of this infantile amnesia by scanning the brains of awake infants with functional magne...
