A sexist, violent slogan targeting Premier Jacinta Allan at a protest outside Victorian Parliament has sparked outrage. The language echoed abuse faced by Julia Gillard over a decade ago.

As Gender Equity Victoria’s Micaela Drieberg said: “It wasn’t acceptable then, and it isn’t now.” ⬇️

New report by our Director @shellkryan.bsky.social & a global research team finds that impostor syndrome isn't an individual issue, it's fuelled by workplace cultures that pit people against each other – and it disproportionately impacts women & minoritised groups

Three years on from the Jenkins Report, there’s still work to do to create a safe and respectful culture in Parliament. Progress has been made, but change needs sustained leadership and accountability

And with the recent influx of more women & new faces into the parliament, the time to act is now 👇
Three years after the Jenkins report, there is still work to be done on improving parliament culture
Since the release of the “Set the Standard” report in 2021, there has been a flurry of activity in response. But some of it may not be as effective as it could be.

With at least 19 women already killed by violence in 2025, the question remains: why is gender-based violence still not a national priority?

Hannah Fearnside calls for urgent policy action that goes beyond budget announcements to meaningful reform & accountability👇

“Achieving true gender and diversity parity in politics requires more than increasing candidate numbers – it demands a fundamental shift in how, and where, women and diverse candidates are positioned to compete" says report co-author, @eliseinthewoods.bsky.social

➡️ giwl.anu.edu.au/2025-election
giwlanu.bsky.social
Diversity among candidates remains another area of concern – of the 591 declared candidates at the point of analysis, 21% self-identified as belonging to diverse or underrepresented groups

However, this figure falls short of the rate of diversity seen in the current Parliament (29%)

84% of the Coalition's female candidates are contesting 'glass cliff' seats, compared to 50% of Labor women

So, while this is a persistent issue across parties, Labor women do have a more even playing field heading into this election
giwlanu.bsky.social
Across both major parties, female candidates are disproportionately running in 'glass cliff' seats that are hard to win, and difficult to hold
giwlanu.bsky.social
While women make up more than half of the candidates being put forward by Labor, less than a third of the Coalition’s candidates are women

And the Coalition is fielding more than twice as many male as female candidates this election
giwlanu.bsky.social
Our NEW report, released today, finds that women remain underrepresented among candidates in the 2025 federal election – and they’re more likely to be running in ‘glass cliff’ seats that are hard to win and precarious to hold ⬇️

Women disproportionately placed in high-risk seats ahead of federal election
While some progress has been made towards gender equality, women remain underrepresented among candidates in the 2025 federal election.

What exactly does "woke" mean, and is the term being weaponised by politicians as we head towards this election?

GIWL Researcher @jackhayes.bsky.social spoke to SBS News about how the term "woke" is often used to criticise diversity, equity and inclusion policies

What does 'woke' mean? Peter Dutton's warning to schools is deliberately vague
Schools and universities with "woke" curriculums have been put on notice by Peter Dutton who doesn't want young people "indoctrinated".
