Regularly see a pair of Australian Wood Ducks wandering into the roadways near my house. Such beautiful birds but hopelessly unsuited for the world of humans and our killing machines!

Hard to believe this is written by the same person so adverse to the Government social media age restrictions.
FB (including their other services) has only gotten worse in all the dimensions you reference in the 15 years since. With many more deaths attributable.

On their 17th birthday they magically go from being too naive to handle social media to off you go you can cope now. And the age-guesser will know to turn the feed on just by looking at them.

Hi JJW. I was responding to the penguin account.

This complaint is about platform implementation not gov policy.
The law does not tell platforms to create a poor user experience or to regulate corporate accounts - these are choices by platforms.
The law says "prevent under 16s from having accounts" & "protect users privacy and data".

When you want to be annoyed about this new policy, remember who is causing the harm here - social media companies who prioritise engagement (money) over safety.
They knowingly and intentionally design their products in ways that cause harm.
Governments have a duty to protect citizens.

Hi JJW. Yes, complex issue requiring multi-stakeholder action
p15 = proposed actions for policymakers who "play an imp't role...in protecting youth from harm [from social media]" incl "policies that limit access...to minimise harm...incl enforcing age minimums."
+ More action req'd by more parties.

I prefer this one from Greta Thunberg “The one thing we need more than hope is action. Once we start to act, hope is everywhere.”
December 12, 2025 at 10:44 AM
"Hope is a creature of privilege: we know that things will be lost, but it is comforting to believe that others will bear the brunt of it...We need courage, not hope...Courage is the resolve to do well without the assurance of a happy ending."

We Need Courage, Not Hope, to Face Climate Change
Where do we go when we are beyond hope? A climate scientist reflects on the courage we need to accept that we must continue to pursue solutions, even in the face of failure.

Also, this foundational premise is false.
Young people are not banned from seeking and finding information and help on the internet.
December 10, 2025 at 7:57 AM
Importantly, access doesn't include the auto-playing algorithnically-fed infinite-scrolling gamified-relationship endless-notification engine hacking their attention under the false premise of 'social relationships'.
That is the purpose.
Not to keep them off the internet.

Goodnight JJW.
I hope you take the time to read the report I sent you.

What?
December 9, 2025 at 9:26 AM
I use my real name (which you refuse to spell correctly). There's no mystery.
December 9, 2025 at 9:09 AM
I would hope we can do better than "I don't like this idea because people I don't like are supporting it"
Recognise the real harms, vulnernable victims (esp kids), & the fundamental power asymmetry between kids+parents & the most powerful people/companies to ever exist.
That needs gov regulation.
December 9, 2025 at 9:05 AM
It's a good article & raises critical issues. Equity, access, community, privacy ✅
But it doesn't mention or acknowledge the very real harms associated with access by minors to social media & other inappropriate online content.
This is a good report & worth a read.

Ongoing engagement with kids & good parenting! More of this! More of other initiatives from gov, society, etc.
SM delay is ALSO needed.
The technofeudalists have shown that child (or societal) health & safety is not priority.
Parents (alone & individually) *cannot* counter multi-$B brain hacking.
December 9, 2025 at 3:44 AM
"the entire ban is a mindless reaction to something which could be solved by parents talking to their kids"
This is a false/incomplete solution based on a false assumption.
