Yeah, that comes up. I basically say that this is the regime of GR and touches scales where the notion of relative velocity becomes weird. What do you say?

I guess I can agree with that... when I have to tell a pop science audience about expansion, I usually also go with "never talk about space itself, always talk about masses in space (and how they move/what you can measure)".

Honestly, one thing I could never figure for myself even: are the binding lengths of bound systems changed by cosmic acceleration? In the Newtonian picture, the should be, right?

I understand what you say, and I agree that this calculation works. I'm just saying it is difficult to transport this to a larger audience.

You mean a derivation like in Liddles book? I guess my question is how does that pressure act on galaxies intuitively. Pressure implies a fluid. Two distant galaxies in a a box hardly form a fluid, right? My question is more about how to convey that picture, not so much about how physical it is.

Okay, I see! I agree that this is a suitable way of explaining it to a larger audience w/o GR. It becomes more difficult if you introduce Lamda, because that raises a lot of weird questions about how this cosmic acceleration is actually "applied" on e g. a galaxy.

The answer seems simple to me if you view cosmic expansion as an initial velocity of separation v0 between two objects. Then, gravity "overcoming" expansion just means that the integrated change of velocity from gravitational attraction becomes bigger than v0.

Man müsste das noch auf die gefahrenen Kilometer normieren, sonst ist der Vergleich nicht besonders aussagekräftig.
