The age of romanticism can be talked about a bit more here, but I’ll leave my rambling to my journal. I just wanted to gush my main interpretations of flower language here because I’m absolutely enthralled by this film. Thank you for reading 🖤

which I personally see in the way the flowers have dried and preserved. So, while her love for Thomas remained, the death of the flowers officially cut their tie and the bond between Ellen and Orlok has been preserved in a way similar to a lover’s embrace. Their bond is everlasting, just like lilacs

and his companionship. The dead lilacs surrounding them at the end tells me (just my interpretation) that either, or both, her love for Thomas and their bond officially died due to choices the both of them have made, or the bond of her and her fated lover being immortalized { 5 }

instead heading off the further seal their severing relationship. The dried lilac in the locket that Orlok takes and him saying “lilac” in his tongue is the film’s way of Orlok ‘awakening’ the bond between himself and Ellen. An old love that was ignited when a young girl called for him { 4 }

taking the dead, dried lilacs placed around both Ellen’s and Orlok’s corpses at the end. I believe that Ellen mentioning to Thomas that the lilacs were dying was her telling him their tragic fate. Their love would die, for her true fate lied with another. Thomas ignores this plea, { 3 }

in which Ellen’s marital tie to Thomas was. On the contrary, lilacs symbolized one’s first feelings of love (the beginning of the film when she reached for Count Orlok), an old love (one that the Count had been longing for, for their love transcended mortal bonds, and remembrance { 2 }

Only when we accept the evil as real will we be able to learn from it and vanquish its grasp on us. Ellen has a TON of symbolism within the film, and I find her love story as tragic as it is beautiful. More of my thoughts later, maybe. I’m tired.

romantics were built upon, and I felt like Professor Albin fleshed out the mediation between the sides of science and supernatural splendidly. He trusts science and its new ways into the world, but also believes that we must face the evils that do not follow scientific laws. { 2 }
