One crazy summer, Sam and I spent a month with a good friend and her family in South Dakota. Here’s Sam at Mount Rushmore, looking patriotic AF (he actually could not care less if he tried). And dressed as a cowboy, which he absolutely loved, as evidenced by that huge grin. 😀

Here’s Sam with his big sister, the summer after their dad decided he had done all he wanted to do for them. And yet we remain defiantly happy. As is the case with most situations like this, it was the wisest parenting decision he made in their entire childhood. #autism

Those baby blues have stayed that way his entire life and are a huge reason he gets away with a lot of shenanigans. Sam was a huge sensory seeker as a kid, so there was a lot of climbing, couch cushions never stayed in place and rough play was a daily occurrence.

I would be out of line to not express my heartfelt thanks to the professionals that helped us in the beginning. Birth to Three of WV led us down the path to a diagnosis, which then opened the door for early interventions and therapies that have made such a difference. #WVBTT #autism

Sam was born a month premature. He just skirted past the 5lb weight requirement to go home with me. In his defense, umbilical cords apparently are as easy to tangle up around your head as one of those spiral rotary phone cords. Here’s us at Christmas 2003. He is one month old.

I am an adult, and during my 15 years or so career working with families and children at risk I’ve seen some gnarly shit.
