Let's drop the naivité and accept that this war will end on the battlefield after Ukraine achieves the necessary military strength, not in a conference room after a round of talks and a carafe of wine.

Don’t Eastern Europe’s farmers want the closest possible alliance with the country that is keeping the Muscovites off their land? Why not ask their governments to accelerate EU accession talks and send more ammo?

On the plight of the unbombed farmers of Eastern Europe
Farmers are, understandably, demanding safeguards and compensation. The efficient and fair way to achieve that is by accepting Ukraine as a full EU member.

The unbombed farmers of Eastern Europe want protection from Ukraine while all the time Ukraine is protecting them from Russia. This makes no sense.
In my oped for @politico I argue that the best way to resolve this is by accepting Ukraine as a full EU member. Now.

Getting real about EU enlargement means more than a “very concerned” tweet once in a while. European inaction and indifference will only increase the risk of losing the whole region, including Ukraine.

The End of the Enlargement Dream?
Getting real about European enlargement means more than a “very concerned” tweet once in a while.

EU enlargement requires real commitment from Brussels, otherwise candidates will simply drift away. We saw this in Georgia, and after today's announcements I am increasingly worried that we are seeing the same in Ukraine. More thoughts below 🔗👇

Was this the worst NATO Summit ever? “Well, at least it wasn’t a disaster,” a friend said when we discussed the matter. And I had to agree — it could have been much worse. For example, we might not have NATO anymore. But we still do. So, technically, yay.

Ukraine is deterring Putin. Like all bullies, he will now be looking to escalate elsewhere, where he sees no deterrence. Are we really deterring him enough to stop him opening a new front?

The next Pearl Harbor won’t come by sea. It may come through Lithuania.

The obliteration of Russian strategic bombers left us stunned — and rightly so. Strategists on all sides will now be forced to rethink what Ukraine is truly capable of achieving.

Maybe the negotiations aren’t even meant to work. Maybe the plan was always for Trump and Putin to meet to redraw Europe’s borders. But that isn’t a deal, that’s more like a pact. The same “peace plan” was tried in 1938 and it didn’t work out well.

Eleven weeks ago a “coalition of the willing” gathered together to discuss what they were willing to do. Since then they haven’t appeared to be willing to do anything at all. 🔗👇

If we choose to miss this historic opportunity to strengthen our defences together, no EU member will be able to escape the deadly consequences. Nobody will be “dry after jumping in a puddle”, as we say in Lithuania.🧵17/17

We should be in a very good mood right now, not in a panic. Europe is poised to reap huge rewards if the stepping up moves from speeches to actual steps. Securing the Eastern Flank is not a burden, it’s an opportunity, and we can all share in the benefits.🧵16/17

If a pandemic infects Italy, we all help Italy. Comparing Russian imperialism to a disease is not much of a stretch. If Putin is allowed to plunder Eastern Europe, the Pyrenees won’t stop a Russian invasion of Spain any more than the Alps stopped the spread of COVID-19.🧵15/17

I disagreed with the Prime Minister of Spain’s recent comments about Spain’s defence responsibilities effectively ending at the Pyrenees. Challenges to our continent come from many angles, and we all agreed to stand together against all of them, even if we are far away.🧵14/17

Sixth: Become a true foreign and defence policy union.
Selfishness weakens us. The EU should collectively procure equipment and pre-position it in those member states most likely to face Russian aggression. Planning for that must start, and finish, as soon as possible.🧵13/17
