That, but also simply: Whitmer is governor of a state where DHS/ICE hasn't focused. Detroit, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo ... these aren't cities akin to Chicago and Los Angeles.

Eugene Debs on a national level, but the election of @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social seems more an update on the American socialist movement that was centered in Milwaukee from around 1892-1960. MKE had three 20c socialist mayors, though was a much less multicultural city than New York today.
